Bucs looking into Favre deal

Tampa Bay is increasingly looking like Brett Favre's destination. Buccaneers quarterback Chris Simms told the St. Petersburg Times that general manager Bruce Allen asked him last week how he thought Favre would fare in the Bucs' offense with limited practice time. "(Allen) asked me questions about Brett Favre," Simms told the paper's NFL reporter, Rick Stroud. "He asked if I felt Brett would be able to come back and be good here if he didn't have a lot of reps in training camp. I said I thought he would but there would have to be some compromise with coach (Jon) Gruden. He'll just want the play called and to drop back and throw it in there. "But it's something we talked about." The Bucs run a version of the West Coast offense, and Gruden, a Packers assistant from 1992 through '94, long has admired Favre.

Yes!! Let's see, that's 16 QB's, two lineman and a punter ... we just need like eight more guys and we can field a team!

July 24, 2008  06:59 AM ET

Why? They already have so many QB's on the roster. They need to focus on Jeff Garcia and getting QB Josh Johnson ready for the future. This would just take a hit on the Bucs.

The Bucs should take him and then flip him to the Vikes a week later. The Vikes need a QB and are clearly interested. The Bucs could make out like Bandits.

Why is this news? They've been in negotiations all along.

This is "news" cause Chris Simms is giving us insight on his conversations with Bucs management. I haven't heard that before, so that would constitute it as being "news". And no body in the Favre deal has been in "negotiations". They haven't even figured out who they, or if they are even gonna trade him as of yet. You have to make an offer to someone for their to be "negotiations".

why didn't some one ask Chrissy Simms how he'd fare in the Bucs offense....oh wait we all ready know the answer to that one.

July 24, 2008  07:43 AM ET

This is all smoke and mirrors. The Bucs are doing a favor for GB by driving up the price for Favre.

July 24, 2008  08:28 AM ET

One year contract with one option year: Why not? He is better than Garcia.

July 24, 2008  08:33 AM ET

Not a surprise that the Bucs are getting one more quarterback. They need to add also Vinny Testeverde and maybe Dan Marino also. This is a joke. Too many quarterbacks. Those quarterbacks that signed up for the Bucs are stupid also. Why go there when there are too many QBs already.

This is like the Memphis Grizzlies where they have too many point guards.

July 24, 2008  08:45 AM ET

Gruden has never seen a QB he doesn't like....He can add Favre to Plummer on the shelf

July 24, 2008  08:45 AM ET

No, no, no, no, dear God, no.

Look, I know Florida is one big retirement community, but that is no reason to turn One Buc Place into a QB graveyard. They already have a solid veteran on the roster in Garcia. What they need to be doing now is building up a long-term prospect for the future, not wasting cap space on guys that won't be there in three years' time.

July 24, 2008  08:53 AM ET

Just get it done so we can quit hearing about this every day.

July 24, 2008  09:05 AM ET

What is there to think about? The Bucs should get Favre if they can.

July 24, 2008  09:08 AM ET

I think people are generally tired of Favre talk, but this would be a great deal for Tampa. He's an upgrade over Garcia even if you count his hot wife. This guy was in All-Pro form just last year and he's got a chip on his shoulder now. If Tampa can get him cheap, which they will b/c there is no market for him and GB has to get rid of him. The Bucs can take 1-2 more shots at a ring before Ronde, DB, Galloway and Favre have to hang it up.

wow, two old qb's makes sense...the greatness that is gruden's will have Brett throwing those two yard tight end screens (jeremy stevens) in no time...bet: farve's yds per completion goes down at least one year if he signs with the bucettes...

July 24, 2008  09:23 AM ET

Better say your prayers Favre else stay retired,
Do the Bucs have Insurance clause?
Cause they will need one in new contract (Bucs of the hook if QB gets hurt)
Bucs don't have OL why do you think Garcia runs so much?
One blind side hit to Favre and its "lights out"
I guarantee it!!!

July 24, 2008  09:28 AM ET

Bucs Lineup:

QB: Favre
RB: Garcia (Can be used to throw deep on "trick" plays)
WR: Chris Simms (Can be used to throw the ball laterally on "trick" plays)

ESPN can't wait

Word has it Gruden is trying to secure Trent Green and talk Rich Gannon out of retirement.
