Pirates lower asking price for Nady

The word is that the asking price for Pirates outfielder Xavier Nady has "loosened'' a tad, and that Pittsburgh seems more interested than before in trading him. The Pirates were said a couple weeks ago by the New York Post to be seeking "two top prospects'' for Nady, who's having a big year (12 HRs, 56 RBIs, .327), but that seems to have come down a tad. The Rays, Yankees, Mets, Phillies, Diamondbacks and Cardinals are among the teams to have inquired about one or more of the Pirates' star outfielders. Several teams are seeking a righthanded bat, making Jason Bay and Nady especially desirable.

Great, as a Pirate fan you know a collection of stiffs is on its way to either the farm system or to rot on the bench. Another Rios, Ron Wright, Midre Cummings, or perhaps worse.

The good news is the Buccos will get a compensatory pick when they likely fail to sign Alvarez due to the Buccos' frugalness and the shyster nature of agent Scott Boras.

"...asking price for Pirates outfielder Xavier Nady..."

Remember folks, the X in Xavier is pronounced like a Z.

...and the 'asking price' in Pirates-speak is pronounced like: FIRE-SALE

As long as it doesn't "loosen" too much and they get real players.

Dave Littlfield totally screwed this team and lets not forget that the Nuttings are among the worst owners in sports. I'm all for tearing this team down to the ground and rebuilding anew. What's the worst that can happen? Another losing season or two after this one. It sure beats the band aid they keep putting on the gushing wound.

God I hate when T&R post stories from their own website. I already read this.

Nady and Marte to Tampa?

July 24, 2008  09:47 AM ET

I'm not really interested in Nady for St Louis, but I'd still be interested in Bay at the right price.

July 24, 2008  10:47 AM ET

I'd rather have the outfield we've got in St. Louis than Bay or Nady, seeing as there's no way we won't give up prospects. Either ante up and get Holliday, or concede the playoffs and play for next year (ie bring up Rasmus and ease Carpenter back slowly, and sign some decent FA's for once).

July 24, 2008  11:45 AM ET

I'd take Bay long-term over Skip Schumaker. A combo of Bay-Ankiel -Ludwick could be a pretty formidable outfield for the next few years.

If we could get Bay without giving up too much, I would say do it. I'm split on surrending Rasmus for Bay, but I think the Pirates are more interested in pitching. If Mo could get them interested in Bryan Anderson as the centerpiece of a deal for Bay, then I think we'd have something.

This SI post and the ESPN analysis don't match up.

Value is roughly the same as previously advertised plus NH has said previously he's willing to haggle. (NOTE - Expect Bay's price is so high because Bucs really are not looking to move him)

July 24, 2008  03:22 PM ET

The Cards need a speedster more than anything. They should keep Rasmus and see what he can do on the bases.

July 25, 2008  02:44 AM ET

I'm a Bucco fan and there is absolutely no way Bay will be dealt in the division or at all unless the offer is unbelievable. His outstanding performance this year has solidified him as a key piece of the new management's rebuilding. I love the X-man but I'd be disappointed if he didn't get dealt for pitching. As for the asking price, a middle infielder or reliever prospect (average to above-average) and a good starting pitcher prospect would be a reasonable return. But if he keeps up the hot hitting (his hitting streak is up to 13 or 14 games now) two starting pitching prospects would not be out of the question. Don't forget whoever gets him retains control until the end of the 2009 season.

Note to Pirates: If you CAN'T get what you want for a player then DON'T trade him. What's the rush? I thought we got rid of Littlefield & Company?!

As in the past, let's see, what will the Pirates take for Nady? How about a one-armed pitcher and a one-legged shortstop. Sounds true to form......

wow...he went to the Yankees for next to nothing

July 26, 2008  09:35 AM ET

I don't know. It appears the Bucs got at least a couple of definite major league prospects, that will likely be with the big club in a year or two

July 28, 2008  07:21 AM ET

Apparently they didn't listen to me. What a JOKE of a trade. Littlefield & Co must still be in the woodwork.

"Prospects"? Hell, I'm a "prospect" too until I go in and serve up all the gopher balls like the rest of the staff. They are only "prospects" in the Pirates' organization. In the rest of the MLB they are simply "AAA". I can hear the Yankees laughing from here.......

Pirates talents scouts....aka.....oxymorons.
