Did Nationals get fleeced?

A couple executives with relievers to sell expressed annoyance that the Nationals dealt Jon Rauch to the Diamondbacks for second-base prospect Emilio Bonifacio, claiming it wasn't enough for Rauch. "I was surprised that's all Washington got,'' one AL executive said. However, Bonifacio isn't bad (one exec likened him to former big leaguer Delino DeShields, who was a top stolen base threat for years), and if anyone knows the D'backs' prospects, it's Nats assistant GM Mike Rizzo. Bonifacio is said to be a fine defender with excellent speed.

I agree with Xiaotu--he/she always adds value to these discussions.

This is an underappreciated move by the D Backs. Rauch is tough.

How much longer before Bowden is fired? This guy has put together a team that would finish dead last in AAA, let alone the NL East. And he could only get 1 prospect for Rauch?!?

But they have a nice new stadium...

July 24, 2008  10:37 AM ET

Yeah, the stadium is the only thing that keeps the fans coming through the gates. But at some point they'll have to field a competitive team - and that's not going to happen w/Bowden there.

.....As usuall

July 24, 2008  11:31 AM ET

Delino was not a fine defender......so I assume the comparison is only about his speed.

What's wrong with Delino?

July 24, 2008  02:09 PM ET

Yeah, the Nats did get fleeced on this deal. Have they made any moves that have truly panned out yet??

July 24, 2008  02:58 PM ET

They've made absolutely zero deals that have panned out yet (although the jury is still out on Dukes and Milledge). And I'm calling it now, this Bonifacio kid will be just as bad as Bourne (the kid in Houston). Both can run but neither can hit.

Washington sucks. So does their Gm. Fire him immaeditely.

July 24, 2008  03:33 PM ET

Did Nationals get fleeced? YES!

Well I don't think so, because I have seen Bonifacio play a lot in the Dominican Republic and I can tell that he could be better that Luis Castillo and Rafael Furcal.

Big Boys make Big Decisions - tell the trade posse to go back to sleep !!!

The Nats want a small ball team and this prospect fits in with that... but they are far from a successful campaign...
