Do secretive Braves want to deal Teixeira?

The secretive Braves aren't saying whether they're buyers or sellers. But people around baseball wouldn't be surprised in the least if there was a deal just before the deadline involving star first baseman Mark Teixeira. The Braves are apparently trying to gauge their chances to contend now, and that's understandable since they're in the unimposing NL East. Even so, their chances don't look so hot from here, at seven games out and in fourth place. With all the injury problems they've had (is Mike Hampton ever coming back?), most baseball people ultimately believe reality will set in and Teixeira will be moved.

The upcoming Phillies and Mets series' will make up their minds..... if they don't gain any ground, they'll sell..... But if they are able to chop the lead down a couple of games in the next few days, they'll only be four out.....

July 24, 2008  09:06 AM ET

Agreed. The Braves have to decide if they're in it to win it, or if this ain't gonna be their year. If they deal, Tex is about all they have to clean out though. Most their other guys are young.

'Secretive' braves? Can we say that? Isn't that...you know...racist?

Racist, what? No. Come on. Give me a break. That's a ridiculous stretch.

I don't knnnnoooww....I'm just saaayin...

Alright fine. We'll check it. Jimmy - Can we run this headline past the 'political correctness' police one more time? Move it.

They also have Will Ohman.... an effective lefthanded reliever.... a valuable commodity in the MLB..... he's a FA at the end of the year and will be signing a nice fat contract for what he does.....

Didnt Chipper Jones just get hurt?

The Braves aren't going anywhere. They'll trade him, but to what team is the big question.

July 24, 2008  09:23 AM ET

Of course they want to deal him. The problem is no contender is desperate enough to overpay for the rental.

CardsFan2 | 07/24/08, 09:23 AM

Exactly. And as Peter Gammons said yesterday, there aren't really any contenders who need a 1B.

July 24, 2008  09:24 AM ET

The Angels will over pay for him, and then he will be with the yanks next year...

July 24, 2008  09:25 AM ET

As long as he doesn't sign an extension. He's the Yankees first baseman next year. Maybe he can help recruit CC Sabathia as well.

July 24, 2008  09:39 AM ET

He won't be a Yankee- they have a glut of 1st basemen as it is. The Yankees know they have bats in their lineup- they need starters. Truth is the Braves will not have alot of leverage in shopping the man since the 1st base position is usually stacked with anyone actually in contention this year. It'd be better for them (Braves) to either extend the man or let him walk and get the extra draft picks...

July 24, 2008  09:40 AM ET

With Chipper hurt AGAIN, and now ZERO chance of winning the NL East, he's as good as gone!

July 24, 2008  09:45 AM ET

Tex makes sense with the Yankees next year but I think CC will go to the Dodgers.

July 24, 2008  09:46 AM ET

The Angels won't pick him up as a DH. They won't move Kotchman either. Unless they get him really cheap, I don't see him with the Angels. The other rumor about Wood and Quinlan, is a really cheap deal though. The Braves are kind of screwed on this one.

July 24, 2008  09:59 AM ET

DH? Teixiera is a Gold Glover. Why would they do that?

I agree the market isn't great, and that's where the discussion comes in about keeping Tex and taking the picks from whoever signs him as a FA..... they will certainly trade him if they can get good value.....

Also, we don't know the extent of Chipper's injury yet..... hamstrings are not good though, especially with the Phillies and Mets coming up..... so, even if he's out a week, we could be 10 games out upon his return.....

July 24, 2008  10:02 AM ET

If they are not going to sign him they should trade him. They are not going to the playoffs
The price of rentals is too high.

July 24, 2008  10:03 AM ET

Race is not over....probally will stay in Atlanta.

AllStarz | 07/24/08, 10:02 AM

I agree they're not going to the playoffs. But I think at this point they'll get better value for him by just letting him walk.

July 24, 2008  10:36 AM ET

AllStarz: the issue is that the Braves are playing the Phillies and Mets the next two series' .... if they do well, they could be back in this thing..... you never want to pull the ripcord too early and blow a playoff opportunity..... if they get swept again by Philly, then we're out of it and can focus on next year....

Is SI deeming the Braves "secretive" simply because the organization doesn't tip its hand to sports-media geeks?
