Carmelo: I'll be more of a leader

Carmelo Anthony said no one from the Nuggets has talked with him about any long-term plans, but he insisted that even if nothing else was done by the front office, there will be some changes next season. Most notably, Anthony said, is his goal of taking on a much greater role in leading the team. "I've gotta become more vocal -- nobody else wants to step up and take that role, so I'm going to do it. Whether it turns out good or bad, I'll take the blame," he said. "Last year I took the blame for what went on the playoffs. I kinda got in trouble by saying we quit, which I thought we did."

slow news day ,huh

Ah duh....you are the face of the team bro! ...take notes from LeBron.

July 24, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Yeah he needs to do this, he needs to be a leader and more vocal.

July 24, 2008  10:28 AM ET

Just like I said 2 months ago, that whole "trade Carmelo" nonsense was a smoke screen by the Nuggets to motivate him. Like him or not, you don't trade such a young player who's proven he can play in this league. At this point you go with a zero tolerance approach off the court and hope that he becomes a better all-around player on the court.

And to think some of you morons thought they were going to trade a star under 25 to keep overrated A.I., laughable at best.

July 24, 2008  10:31 AM ET

Hahahahahaha... now that's funny. The man doesn't have the maturity to be a leader. He's just not a franchise player.

July 24, 2008  10:38 AM ET

You might quit puffing those joints then......LOL

July 24, 2008  10:38 AM ET

Whatever you do, don't take advice from AI.

July 24, 2008  10:49 AM ET

Anthony will be a leader? And I suppose Iverson will become a lockdown defender as well?

July 24, 2008  10:58 AM ET

I think AI was more of a detriment to the team then an advantage. Before AI, the Nuggets seemed to be on the upswing. Getting AI changed the outcome of the team. AI is really good individually but teamwise he is not. AI and Melo got 2/3 of the points and that's not a good thing for team chemistry. It makes the other players unreliable. Hard for others to step up. Melo would do better w/out AI.

July 24, 2008  11:00 AM ET

He most certainly is a franchise player! He needs an attitude adjustment, but he can put the team on his back. Get a legit post player and you will see him thrive not just better numbers, but wins. He did win a title at Syracuse...no one questioned him there. Not every elite player can win a title and he is very young, so cut him some slack.

July 24, 2008  11:30 AM ET

Talk is cheap. The Nuggets gave away their only defensive stopper. They will be lucky to win 30 games, regardless of who's speaking. The Nuggets were beaten by a better team. It only appeared they gave up. Trade Iverson, and it will get worse. They can battle the Knicks and the Heat for the official doormat of the NBA.

July 24, 2008  11:52 AM ET

It's nice to see that he may be starting to get it.......
that his phyical tools alone will not get him an NBA title as he got in college- that there is a LARGE mental aspect to playing professional ball

July 24, 2008  11:55 AM ET

I will believe it when I see it.

July 24, 2008  11:57 AM ET

That means he has a solid connection to the tree and will be providing it to the rest of the team.

July 24, 2008  12:05 PM ET

Melo is a beast, just watch the Olympics! He should be a leader because he is the face of the franchise. If he steps it up on the defensive end then he will be an all around complete player.
