Coughlin to Shockey: Good riddance
Posted: Thursday July 24, 2008 07:42AM ET
Every syllable, word and sentence of the poignant theme Tom Coughlin presented yesterday as he arrived at Giants training camp made crystal clear that in order for this team to learn the lessons of its Super Bowl triumph, Jeremy Shockey had to go. The former Giants tight end was shipped this week to New Orleans, not because he's no longer a viable player but because the franchise - from the front office to some in the coaching staff to many of his teammates - grew tired by his diva act. Coughlin's message yesterday was simple and resounding - "Team over self is why we win" - and, asked if Shockey's inability to adhere to that mantra was a factor in the trade, he admitted, "I am sure at some point in time that was part of the consideration."

Mmmmm....yesssss....revealing many things to me, the force is. The future...the past...friends long gone...Rollercoaster rides not taken...movie-theaters with poor sight-lines for the vertically challenged...

I'd be embarrased to wear that ring if I were Shockey.

Report Offensive CommentI think he wears the ring when he hangs out with Nomar Garciaparra.....

Report Offensive CommentYeah, after all, Tom Coughlin wouldn't want any white-trash on his team.

I would too, BoBo. I don't think Shockey is capable of embarrassment.

You might be right, but he'll still have one more Super Bowl ring than you'll ever get a chance to wear.

Report Offensive CommentShockey is a hemorrhoid... a major pain in the ****.

Report Offensive CommentCoughlin has always been a hard*ss, no-nonsense guy. It was only a matter of time before he and Shockey had to go their separate ways.
Shockey appears to lack the discipline needed to produce at the level needed to help a team reach the championship level. He's getting a fresh start now; let's see what he does in New Orleans. Don't get your hopes up!
Dapper Dave | 07/24/08, 08:55 AM
Report Offensive CommentI like Coughlin more and more. Jeremy Shockey can go back to drinking. New Orleans is certainly a good place for that.

Report Offensive CommentI think Shockey will be a big contributor in the Saints offense this season until they get tired of him acting like a big bi*ch...

Report Offensive CommentIt's a win-win for both teams. The Giants rid themselves of a distraction who they can win without while the Saints get a player who can help them. In 3 years the Saints will be where the G-Men are today. Not Super Bowl Champs, but wanting to get rid of Shockey. (I'm being kind with the 3 years.)

Great avatar Dan. Loved that movie. Soooo out shone the Billy Bob one.
Hooah05! | 07/24/08, 09:20 AM
Report Offensive CommentWhat did you expect Coughlin to say....Yes, we traded a 4 time pro bowler, one of the top TEs in the game, and a guy who has productive years in front of him, all for two draft choices that will not be as good as the ones we would have had if we traded him before the draft? At least that would have been the truth. If Shockey, Barber, or any other Giant was a distraction, it reflects issues at the top. If Coughlin cannot control his players, is that not a problem with Coughlin? Of course, I do realize that no one from New York can ever be wrong....

Report Offensive CommentGood riddance is right. See you later, jackass.
Maybe the Saints will enjoy him refusing to work out with the team during the offseason, showing up his quarterback and unfathomable drops. He hasn't done jack for a few years anyway for the Giants except **** about everything.
