Rule change targets Toyotas

NASCAR's decision Wednesday to reign in Toyota's horsepower advantage in the Nationwide Series - which the automaker's top racing official said was without technical justification - is likely to fuel the perception the manufacturer would spend its way to competitive dominance. The sanctioning body issued a technical bulletin Tuesday night requiring all engines with a cylinder bore spacing more than 4.470 inches to use tapered spacers with smaller holes. The change is expected to sap the engine of about 15 horsepower. Although the bulletin did not name Toyota specifically, Toyota's engine is the only one that fit the criteria. The change is effective beginning with Saturday's race at O'Reilly Raceway Park in Clermont, Ind. Toyota responded late Wednesday. "We're extremely disappointed in NASCAR's decision. In our opinion, there is no technical justification to penalize the Toyota engine utilized in the Nationwide Series," said Lee White, president and general manger of Toyota Racing Development USA. "The success of the Toyota Camry this year in the Nationwide Series is the result of hard work and achievement by all of our race teams."

"requiring all engines with a cylinder bore spacing more than 4.470 inches to use tapered spacers with smaller holes"
___________
Why did they have to go to three decimal places on the cylinder bore spacing? Wouldn't 4.47 be exactly the same thing?

Report Offensive CommentYes. I am THAT bored. I'm stuck at work at 5 a.m. (west coast) 'cause the d0uchewad that was supposed to take over at 2 called in 'sick' at 1:45 a.m.

Report Offensive CommentWhile I don't like the Toyos in NASCAR, if they're doing something right, why should they be penalized? I thought your supposed to get a competitive advantage.
Turfman | 07/24/08, 08:38 AM
Report Offensive CommentI'm with Turfman on this one. NASCAR is stifling innovation...again. Rather than force Toyotas to adhere to the lowest common denominator, this ought to encourage the other three manufacturers to step it up with their own engine programs.
nin_man | 07/24/08, 08:43 AM
Report Offensive CommentAgreed nin, it is way too late in the season to be asking Toyo to slow down, they should be really encouraging the the teams to get more HP out of their engines. Nascar is so stupid.

Report Offensive CommentLet Toyota finish the season,it isn't going to make
that much difference anyway.Good ol Nascar,
leave it up to those Jug heads to screw up things.

Report Offensive CommentTurfman & nin_man... They made the COT and have rules and regulations for a reason. They want the drivers to beat each other not the equipment. At this point in time, Toyota was permitted to put their new engine into races ahead of everyone else. Being allowed to enter their new engine ahead of everyone else was a HUGE advantage. Kyle has won 7 races and is in the lead of the Cup series by something like 200 pts. Now you see this as innovation while others see it as a form of allowable cheating. I see it as being unfair. If I have an engine and you have an engine and both do the same things, why can't we both run our engines and see who the better driver is.
You know it's funny though, NASCAR has rules and templates in place for the shape of the car, weight of the car, the cooling systems, the water bottle systems, but not for the engines. You can change the engine anyways you want but if you reshape your nose or use a wrong bolt you are fined $100,000, your lose 100pts, your crew chief is suspended for 6 weeks and fined money, and the owner loses owner pts.
I actually for the first time in a long time have to side with NASCAR on this one. They are leveling the playing field. Now if they carry this over to the cup series it would be even more impressive.

Report Offensive CommentOh and for those of you saying NASCAR is stupid. You are right. This should not have been allowed from the start of the season but it didn't come to light until a few weeks ago when The Scene published it. That's when pressure started being put on NASCAR and they realized that the extra 15 horsepower obviously makes a huge **** difference. Kyle's won 7 races. Damn, he was in 36th in one race with 15 laps to go and ended up winning. You telling me that horsepower has nothing to do with it. get real people.

Report Offensive CommentNASCARS attempt to let JR win a championship... If he ran for toyota and had a huge lead nothing would be said.
scottc1010 | 07/24/08, 09:32 AM
Report Offensive CommentDude the article is about the Nationwide Series not Cup, although Kyle has won a lot of races in both series. What Nascar should have done is not allowed Toyo to run the same engines in Nationwide as they do in the Cup that would have made thing much simpler. But I guess better late than never.

BUCKGUY | 07/24/08, 09:40 AM
Report Offensive CommentI have to agree with the BUTT let them all race their new engines. Why givea competitive advantage to one car maker. But Butt we have been talking about this here most of the year so far. And it does put a concieved notion in peoples heads that toyo is better than the other manufacturers because they are winning. I guess with all the sponsorship toyo put into nascar they expected preferencial treatment and got it. All get the new engine or none do!
joefordnproud | 07/24/08, 09:43 AM
Report Offensive CommentJoe you are right, but at the same time if NASCAR has allowed it this long into the season why change it now??? Why not wait untill after the season and make the change?
scottc1010 | 07/24/08, 09:45 AM
Report Offensive CommentNow we will see if it was the driver or the car.
I expect kyle to win at least 3 more races this year at nationwide.

Asbel | 07/24/08, 09:56 AM
Report Offensive CommentWhy not make Ford, Dodge, and Chevy re-engineer their engines up to the toyotas Specs of a cylinder bore spacing more than 4.470 inches??? This is unfair by NASCAR.
AFScott | 07/24/08, 10:01 AM
Report Offensive CommentKyle deserves much more credit than he has gotten though, he squeezes all of the HP out of those Toyo engines with his setups at least at the cup level, something Tony and Denny has not quite done. All the top guys in Cup have been very competitive with their old engines but at the Nationwide level its been a great disparity.
