Would Kotchman-Teixeira deal fly?

Arte Moreno has made this principle clear: Under his ownership, the Angels will not trade top prospects for rental players. But what if the Angels could obtain a rental player by trading a major leaguer, not a top prospect? If Atlanta decides to trade first baseman Mark Teixeira, the Angels could offer first baseman Casey Kotchman and lower-level prospects. In the unlikely event the Braves would not get a better offer and would consider such a bid preferable to collecting two draft picks for Teixeira in free agency, the Angels could add a big bat by trading from the major league roster, without creating a hole at another position or in the minors. But Teixeira is expected to seek a nine-figure contract in free agency rather than sign an extension with a team that might trade for him. And, for now, the Angels are not interested in trading Kotchman, 24. The Braves have not conceded the season and have told other clubs, including the Angels, that Teixeira is not available right now.

The Angels are the only team I can see getting a Texiera deal done with the Braves.

I think it's a straight up trade Kotchman for Teixeira if it's done at all. Teixeira is an upgrade; but, not enough to trade anything more considering the Boras contract issues.

The question, could the angels trade Kotchman, the answer... no. Great story. Compelling, and rich.

Dumb rumor from blogger, why would Angels trade Kotchman who is among their offensive sparks this year. If Angels say no trading Kotchman, and Braves saying they won't trade Texeira, why was this story posted?

Weird deal. How can the Angles afford to pay another fat contract out to Teixeira when they are still paying Matthews and Hunter beaucoup bucks? Why would Teixeira play on the west coast when he wants to be close to Baltimore?

I thought about this for quite a while and came up with one question. What i texeira doesn't resign with the Angels? Now they have a big hole to fill. I can see a package built around either Adenhart or Wood with other minor leaguers but no one in the Big Leagues except maybe for Willits, Quinlan, Or Matthews Jr. But being a Halo fan, i expect the worse and expect them not to make any moves. Hopefully they do without ruining the chemistry but I don't see them doing it.

Arturo "Arte" Moreno (born August of 1946) is an American billionaire of Mexican descent. On May 15, 2003, he made history by becoming the first Hispanic to own a major sports team in the United States when he purchased the Anaheim Angels baseball team from the Walt Disney Company. So paying him won't be that much big of a deal. The question is is he willing to trade for him now or enter the bidding wars this coming offseason. He is one of the few owners who is really dedicated to winning without giving up young talent. Texeira will play where the money is. He would love to play for Baltimore but if for say tha Yanks offer him the mega-contract that he's been waiting for then he's a Yankee but if the Angels or any other west coast team with money to spend offer him more or equal value but with more benefits I can not see him walking away.

The Braves would do this why?

They should just take the picks if this is all they can get.

July 24, 2008  04:30 PM ET

Let the Braves keep the albatross they have in Teixeira now. The Angels have the best record in baseball and lots of young, rising talent that they can lock in for the long-term.

If they want Tex that badly, they can sign him in the off-season with the money they'll save when K-Rod signs with another team.

Because Kotchman is a proven major league player as opposed to an uncertain draft pick.

"the Angels could offer first baseman Casey Kotchman and lower-level prospects. In the unlikely event the Braves would not get a better offer"

This is one stupid article. They wil not get a better offer than Kotchman alone considering Teixeira is a Boras client in a contract year. The real question is whether the Angels would give up Kotchman under those conditions. A 25 year old proven and above average major league player beats two draft picks any day.

I would rather keep Kotchman than get Tex. Kotchman is the best first baseman defensively in baseball, he just doesnt get the credit. He will be a career 300 hitter and probably get up to around 20 homers. Plus he will stay in the Angel uniform for life considering his pops is a Angel scout.
