FC Dallas midfielder Juan Toja's departure to Europe seems imminent. General manager Michael Hitchcock acknowledged there have been talks with Romanian powerhouse Steaua Bucharest but said it's not a done deal. "We continue negotiating what we think is a fair market value for Toja," Hitchcock said. However, Romanian media reported that Toja, 24, is expected to travel to Bucharest directly from Toronto after the All-Star game tonight.

He should he is young, has great skills and will play in a far better competitive league. I was surprised when this kid landed in Dallas, He is a rarety usually MLS brings OLD WASHED UP players - Has-beens for lack of a better term.

I is the man:

"He should he is young, has great skills and will play in a far better competitive league."

Just one problem with this statement: the Romanian top-flight (Romanian Liga I) is actually WORSE than the MLS. Toja moving to that league would in truth be a step DOWN for him, not up.

Hell, Romanian Liga I even has a lower profile than the MLS, for chrissake. If he moves there, you can bet your **** his career will find itself in a cul-de-sac. At least in the MLS, he has a decent shot at getting noticed by an EPL team, or perhaps reinvigorating interest from high-profile South American clubs.

The only potential benefit to moving to Romania for him would be if he simply desires a more enthusiastic footballing culture to play in (and I dunno, maybe that's exactly what he wants). But that's a short-term benefit at best, really.

Mark my words: if Toja goes to Romania, he'll either end his career there, or he'll simply come back to the MLS or a mid-tier South American club a few years later.

Serot: You're MOSTLY right. MLS is a higher standard in most regards, except for maybe this one. Steaua was in Champion's League last year so they'll prolly be in it again. If someone wants to be noticed by higher profile euro clubs that's not a bad way to start.

Additionally, haven't kept up recently. But last I checked Toja was having a pretty bad to mediocre season, and truely not showing a lot of interest/effort in his current situation.

I am going to miss him...he has some major league pelo.

FCD is being dismantled....

Toja getting interest, same with Cooper and same with Shea.....

could be a relatively disappointing season for FCD

damn it! now no on will GET why I grew my mullet back!

July 24, 2008  12:25 PM ET

the Romanian league is ranked 12th in Europe which is very low. Also the team which Toja wants to sign for finished 2nd in the Romanian league which means that they will have a long route to the group stages which doesnot guarantee champions league football.

I think he should stay and rediscover his rookie form at fc dallas and a better offer will surely come begging.

July 24, 2008  12:55 PM ET

It's a Champions League team but Romanian football is far from class.

July 24, 2008  01:52 PM ET

While the Romanian LEAGUE isn't very good, they produce good players. Look at Mutu, Rat, Chivu, Dica and Contra. All are pretty good players that play on mid to top level teams all over Europe. Did you watch the Euros at all? Lobont is a monster keeper and he still plays for Bucuresti. If Toja goes over there he has the chance to get picked up by a better team if he impresses. Plus, like a bunch of you said, Champions league.

toja is a good player and steaua is a very good team and ,has a reaname in european soccer, because won champions league and played a final, and goes constantly in groups of this wonderfull competiton, and for toja ,will be a good tranfer.so i think that if u want all the good for him suport him to go at bucharest and to sign with a big team ,like steaua.good luck toja

July 24, 2008  02:19 PM ET

Serote: You might be right - league-wise it may be less know than MLS but it can also be a stepping stone for the " Thunder mullet" Toja. I can see him moving quickly to Italy or England -- you have to get to Europe in order to broaden your options.
So Serote, I see your point,

Rockin that Mulletino

July 24, 2008  03:14 PM ET

leave it to my latin friends to make even the most ridiculed styles look fashionable and happening. He really is a great talent, but i'm still in awe of his majestic mane.

July 24, 2008  03:28 PM ET

Luxemborg and Lichtenstein also have teams that can play qualifiers for the Champions league, that doesn't mean he should go there to play! I have watched his performace in MLS this year and it has been pretty uninspired. He may just want to get out of dodge.

July 24, 2008  09:42 PM ET

smitty6000: I agree that Toja has been drab in 2008 for Dallas, but I'm not prepared to write him completely off for merely half a season of lackluster play.

But on the otherhand, if his recent play reflects a desire to not be in the MLS anymore, then I suppose Dallas really does have no choice but to trade him while his valuation still remains decent.

As for the rest of you...

I think many of you are making WAY too big a deal out of Bucharest's Champions League appearances.

Remember that Bucharest only gets a *handful* of such games A YEAR (assuming they get knocked out early, which they always do). Is that *really* worth it, in and of itself? I don't think so.

Now, if he was moving to a league like the Dutch or French top-flight and to a club there with CL aspirations, that'd be one thing. But I'm just saying that mere token CL participation isn't a good enough reason for Toja to go to Bucharest, not when 95% of the football he'll play in Romania for the rest of the year will be unnoticed and uncared for by the rest of the world.
