Steinbrenner puts Bonds back on table

Barry Bonds in pinstripes? If nothing else, the New York Yankees plan to talk about it. Yankees officials gathered for high-level meetings at their spring training complex Thursday, a day off for the team before it begins an important three-game series at Boston. Co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner acknowledged he'd mention Bonds, the indicted home run king who became a free agent when the San Francisco Giants did not bring him back. Missing injured sluggers Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada, the Yankees plan to consider ways to improve the team for the stretch run before next Thursday's trade deadline. They've already added first baseman Richie Sexson, who was released by the Seattle Mariners.

The only pinstripes Bonds will be in are the ones on his Armani suit when he sits in court next year.

Did the Yanks just blink first?

I've been surprised that Bonds hasn't been signed by someone as a DH. This might get serious if Sexson doesn't work out.

Ok being from NY I'll tell you what the media down here said. An AP reporter asked Hank (who lets be honest is only 50 % of ownership) would Barry Bonds name come up during these meetings, Hank responded ???I???ll mention it. We???ll cover everything,??? Steinbrenner said before the meetings began. ???No stone will be left unturned.???

NOTHING THERE SAIDS BONDS TO YANKEES...think about it Cashman, Stick Mcheals and Hal Steinbreinner will be there w/ Mark Newman, they all have to agree before that is done.

Sorry quote keys don't work here.

This would make the rest of baseball season interesting.......

July 24, 2008  05:32 PM ET

Well, you aren't surprised, are you? Look at how Yankees fans have embraced Moustache Giambi and Andy Pettitte this year.

July 24, 2008  05:34 PM ET

Stranger things have happened...

July 24, 2008  09:05 PM ET

Big,big mistake. Never mind all the bs surrounding him. The guy hasn't been playing for how many games? Much to much rust for him to shake off. It would be like the kind of deal they got with Clemens last year. Minimal results. I would trade Melky Cabrera, Ian Kennedy and another minor leaguer to Colorado for Matt Holiday. Get the deal done with Washburn and try to get another good catcher to help out. I hope Cashman is smart about this!!

One more roid monster should round out their roster.

July 25, 2008  06:26 AM ET

Bonds is toxic; this will kill the post-season run.

July 25, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Bonds is a perfect fit - The "me first" mentality fits in perfectly with the likes of "A-Rod"

July 25, 2008  11:07 AM ET

Don't they already have a left-handed DH who can't play outfield any more (Damon)? I don't think they need another.

July 25, 2008  02:03 PM ET

They have to atleast have the conversation but if they sign him he'll be ripped apart by the NY Media groups.

and Damon is the lefthanded lead off hitter. Think about bonds hitting behind AROD. AROD would see some really good pitches cause they wouldn't want to walk him to face Bonds with a man on.

July 25, 2008  02:03 PM ET

btw - as a NY Yankee fan I say no thanks!!! I don't want him.

July 25, 2008  02:17 PM ET

Is there possibly a more perfect match than Bonds and the Yankers?
I wonder what Mindy thinks.

I'm just curious what he looks like now. I'd love to see him hit the field 50 lbs lighter and unable to hit the ball past the warning track.
