Met's celebration irks Phillies

If there were any doubts about how heated the burgeoning rivalry between the Mets and the Phillies had gotten, all one had to do was put a thermometer in the visiting clubhouse at Shea Stadium on Thursday afternoon. Before the game, not only were the Phillies complaining that it felt as if the air-conditioning was off on a muggy day, but they were also still a little burned up about what some of them felt was an excessive celebration by the Mets' Jose Reyes the night before. Then after Thursday's game -- a 3-1 loss that moved the Mets into first place above Philadelphia -- the Phillies were also hot about their own lackluster play.

I suppose blaming Rollins lame attempts at being an MVP player had something to do with it too, eh?!

July 25, 2008  07:38 AM ET

Lame attempts?

July 25, 2008  07:43 AM ET

I really didn't think that it was "excessive", it was obviously to get under our skin, but thats what happens in a rivalry .. Larry Anderson's comment was priceless though, "Someone oughta put one in his neck!"
hahahahaha

I guess it would make me mad if an average player, like Reyes, showboat's like he's great ...

Yeah Utley...too bad the players now days are more concerned with chatting up with the opposing team and getting paid rather then winning and actually disliking your opponent. If I see Howard cracking up at first base joking with a player from the other team one more time, I'm going to puke. Maybe that's why he sucks so bad in the field...too busy trying to make friends. LA was right...he def deserved to be thrown at.

Average? He set the new club record for triples, led in stolen bases last year, is third in the same category this year, and is hitting .290-something in the lead-off spot. Average? Not so much.

But I must give Charlie Manuel kudos. This series was big... HUGE. Rollins pulls another dumb stunt, and Charlie says 'have a seat'. I wish more managers were like that. That shows the other guys respect. Good for him.

And point of info - the Mets need to steal Victorino away from the Phillies... I'm tired of him beating up on Met pitching consistantly. Everytime hes up against NYM, I turn the other way and wait for the carnage to subside.

11 homers .....
46 RBI's .....

I guess

It is good to see a "hot" team in a pennant race.... get over it and play ball

July 25, 2008  08:42 AM ET

utley - reyes bats leadoff.. not a typical home run and rbi position. And clearly from your profile you are not a mets fan, as reyes goes so does the mets. To say he is average is hilarious.. everybody except maybe the marlins would prefer him over their shortstop.. philly needs to get jroll an alarm clock so he makes it to the games on time.

I'm sure the Phillies would do the same in the Mets' situation. Grow up and play better, then there'd be no need for you to cry about losing.

Right.

July 25, 2008  08:57 AM ET

Give me a break - the Phillies are a bunch of crybabies. Victorino did the same crap on Tuesday. Don't dish it out if you can't take it. As for the broadcasters comment, very classless, especially since the Phillies pitchers already were throwing at the Mets batters all series

July 25, 2008  08:59 AM ET

Whaaa!

July 25, 2008  09:13 AM ET

REYES IS A HEAD CASE OF P.O.S. BUT A LITTLE CELEBRATION AND THE PHILLIES ARE UP IN ARMS. TOUGH CRAP. YOU'RE PAID $$MILLION$$ TO PLAY A GAME. DEAL WITH THE EXCITEMENT. MAYBE IF THE PHILLIES GOT A LITTLE EXCITED FROM TIME TO TIME THEY WOULDN'T BE IN 2ND PLACE.

I DEFENDED JOBA WITH THE FIST PUMPS AND I WILL DEFEND REYES ON THIS ONE AS WELL BUT I AM GETTING TIRED OF THE METS FANS WHO BLASTED JOBA AND NOW ARE SAYING REYES IS PERFECTLY RIGHT TO DO WHAT HE DID.

I SEE NO PROBLEM WITH WHAT HE DID. IT WASN'T LIKE HE WALKED OUT INTO THE OUTFIELD GIVING OUT HIGH FIVES TO FANS THE FIRST WEEK HE PLAYED.

July 25, 2008  09:33 AM ET

By no way am i a mets fan, but shut up. if you dont want to see them celebrate, dont lose!!!

July 25, 2008  09:39 AM ET

my response to the headline--- So What!

Jose Reyes is a punk...The only player I can respect on that team is David Wright.
