Tortorella talking to Islanders

The big ticket on the carousel of coaching candidates that Garth Snow is running this summer belongs to former Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella, who is scheduled to meet with the Islanders' general manager on Sunday. Because he stands to collect $1.3 million for the remaining year of his Lightning contract, Tortorella can well afford to be choosy about his next job. That salary is slightly more than twice as much as former Isles coach Ted Nolan was believed to be making, but that's what a 2004 Stanley Cup victory will get you. The Lightning's obligation to Tortorella would be offset by whatever salary he makes in a new job this season.

Wouldn't you just want to hear Snow's sales pitch?
There's an olde Marx brothers bit where one of them is walking around with a recruitment sign that says "Join the Army and See The Navy"
Snow's saying, Join The Islanders and See The Rangers, Devils, Penguins..."

This wouldnt turn out good. Can you imagine Torts telling Wang and Snow to go outside and play hide and go **** yourself?

Peter Goezinya

I certainly couldn't imagine him NOT doing it!
It would certainly spice up (not that it needs it) the Islanders/Rangers series

July 25, 2008  09:22 AM ET

Can the Islanders contend for the Cup within the next 2-3 years?
NO!
Can the Islanders win their division over the next 2-3 years?
NO!
Will Dipietro "The Pie" and Tortorella "The Tart" blend?
NO! and its not because there would be too much sweetness between them.
Does Torts want to be tied to another loser for 3 years and looking for a new job?
NO!
Torts Dog and Pony show has a shelf live of 2-3 years. That's it.
Wrong guy for the wrong team at the wrong time. I'll bet he's keeping his ear to the ground in Chicago though.

July 25, 2008  09:25 AM ET

Tortorella has the luxury of getting paid by Tampa,he is in no hurry to find another coaching job.The burning question is,could he get along/tolerate Garth Snow and the three ring circus going on in Long Island?

Well, I hope they at least give Savard half a chance, now that they have some talent in Chicago.

Normy - you took the words right out my mouth. This guy is gonna play golf in Tampa until Savard implodes, as he tends to alientate players with stories about how great he was. Torts will get the Hawks from Point B to Point C, and then he's done. I like the shelf life comment too. I agree!!

July 25, 2008  09:47 AM ET

I hope so too Spiny re-Savard. I like the guy. But there have been some stories coming out of the Windy City that the pressure is on Savard to make the Playoffs or else this year. That scenerio would be watched closely by a guy in Torts position of not needing a pay check for another year.
Besides...what happened to the rumour that Paul Maurice was headed to the Island?
BTW...I responded to the Wizard of Oz NHL on another thread this morning...just to stir things up...I put down a player to take Dorethy's roll.

July 25, 2008  09:49 AM ET

Hey...who gave the non-avatar Gangstersguy permission to call you "Normy"?
I'm speechless...I have no speech!

Maybe he was combining my name into one, easy to manage moniker? No worries
Torts better watch out though. I remember when Nolan got run out of Buffalo, his value went way up. Didn't really work out so well for HIM on Longisland (they say it like it's one word there, so I write it that way)

Ok Raquel - I agree it's time to show my true colors.

July 25, 2008  09:58 AM ET

Okay gangsters, You have to refresh my memory on the name of the guy in your picture...is it Oscar Gamble per chance?

July 25, 2008  09:59 AM ET

I wouldn't work for Garth Snow unless I was a IHL coach that needed a break. If I had a Stanley Cup on my resume, I would wait for an original 6 job opening. Harborside is a nice place to relax for a year and watch the "mullet" coach your guys. I still can't believe they traded away Brad Richards.

July 25, 2008  10:01 AM ET

That is correct - Oscar Gamble. Very nice! I didn't have a pic of a great rack like Baun-ded, as all the others would look meaningless next to the great Raquel. So, I went with my favorite look...I miss the old fro's.

July 25, 2008  10:03 AM ET

Good show Gangstersguy....you see guys, you really have dropped the ball since I've been away lately. All it takes is a little direction. However its good to know that no one has tried to usurp my Avatar monitor duties.

July 25, 2008  10:09 AM ET

What? No Matts Sundin rumor to lead off today's T&R? Unacceptable! Come on, T&R! Don't be so cold hearted! Think of all your readers! You can't deprive fans of such an important story! That's cruel! Please reconsider! We'll have to do something about it! LOL!

July 25, 2008  10:10 AM ET

I swear I just posted something that appears didn't make it.
I'll just say then that Torterella better do something quickly, there is somethjing to that "shelf life" thingy

If Tortorella accepts a coaching job with the Islander then he is every bit as crazy as they said he was in TB!

July 25, 2008  10:23 AM ET

He would almost be as crazy to take a job in a place like Edmonton. I thought we got rid of all of those Canadian small market teams?
