Silva to remain in 185 class

Posted: Friday July 25, 2008 08:27AM ET

Even with a dominating performance in his UFC light-heavyweight debut, Anderson Silva intends to call the middleweight division his home. "My weight class is 185 and that's the belt I'm going to defend," Silva said hours after his 61-second win over James Irvin Saturday in Las Vegas. Silva, who walks around at 220 pounds, would have an easier time making weight if he moves up, but Silva doesn't want to interfere with his friend Lyoto Machida's title goal. "He wants to completely clean out the 185-pound division, which many can argue is only a couple of fights away, but 185 is where he likes to fight," UFC President Dana White said. "He wants to test 205 and that's what he's doing. He's going to take his time and move into that weight class, and who knows? Maybe he'll end up there for good." Silva will most likely fight Patrick Cote next. Yushin Okami was supposed to be next for Silva, but Okami is out with a broken hand.

I love Silva, but I think he has already cleaned out the middleweight division. Its time to play with the big boys Silva.

I disagree with how they do the weight classes anyway... If a man walks around at 220 but kills himself for 1 day to weigh in then regains the weight for the fight, then he really isn't in the same weight class!!!! I say they should change the way people have to weigh in... I say make them weigh in an hour before the fight and then we will have a true weight class. Until then there is no way you can sit here and say he is the 185lb champ when he walks around at 220!!! Shoot thats heavy weight division!!!! Just my opinion though!!

70 lbs (35 lb down then back up) swings in short time frames like that cannot be healthy

He said it immediately after his victory. But it took T&R 6 DAYS to bring this breaking news story our way.

There is an error here - he walks at 212 - not 220.

I was gonna say that has to be wrong...220 to 185 every time is going to kill him!

Well going from 220 to 212 isn't all that different its still 27 pounds he's shedding. And he said BEFORE the fight it was a 1 time deal as a favor to Dana of course Dana spins it off as if it was Silva who wanted test the waters which he never said or wanted to do.

I don't think anyone can even beat him at 205. No matter where he fight he is a MAN among boys! The 185 class a dun deal!

Silva should stay at his weight class, I think Patrick Cote will give him a go, he can stand toe to toe with him during strikes. After this though GSP should move up and fight silva that would be fight of the year, probably the best two fighters in the business going at it

I agree with some of the things you are sayin, but that is and always will be part of combat sports. It is the ability to train your body and mind to endure any pain are discomfort you may face in the ring. Plus when fight at your normal weight you are usually a step are two slower. And most fighters don't gain all that weight back ,but you are correct when they get in the ring or cage they are usually ten to fifteen pounds over their weight class, and sometimes that gives them an advantage

As skinny as Silva is I'm not buying that he gets up to 220 or 212. 200 easily but not 212.

Yea but he is 6'2 and has a thick upper body, so 220 maybe a stretch, but 215,212 yea he is no ?

Yeah look what dropping weight has sone to Lidell's stomach. The paunch is from going up and down in weight too much. Also WE need to see Wanderlei and Anderson fight,Wanderlei is thinking about dropping to 185,man talk about a great fight.

Boxing commissions started doing weigh ins the day of a fight in addition to the day before due to fighters dropping weight for a fight then gaining most of it back after the weigh in. In 2000, Arturo Gatti destroyed Joey gamache in two rounds leaving Gamache with brain damage. The weigh in was the day before the fight and Gatti gained 19 pounds between then and the actual fight the next day going from 141 to 160 pounds. That was the catalyst for weighins to be done on fight day instead of just the day before.
