Pennington leading Jets QB race

Posted: Friday July 25, 2008 05:25AM ET

Kellen Clemens, the Jets' quarterback of the future who replaced Chad Pennington in Game 8, largely flopped, so Eric Mangini and GM Mike Tannenbaum flip-flopped. The best backup they could get was the one they had already under contract, albeit one with a $7 million cap hit for 2008. That's a lot to spend on insurance. But having forked over $141 million to free agents to rebuild their offensive line and give themselves a pass rush, the Jets had to pay up or risk another 4-12 while finding out Clemens can't do the job. The fact that they were not prepared to make that sacrifice suggests Clemens has to beat out Pennington during this camp, not the other way around.

Hank, you need to stop drinking beer so early. I prefer the Alex Smith, Shaun Hill battle royal in SanFran. That's where the action is.

Poor Jets...I feel bad for their fans...

The Jets are sad .......... very sad. Look for another losing season Jets fans, including having the Pats and the Bills rub your nose in the dirt a couple of times this year. I see a 6-10 season ahead for NY

The jets need to tank and get Tebow...

SMH@ the jets..

I don't know why everyone knocks Chad...ok, I do know why, but personally I like the guy, he's smart and manages the game well, especially big ones. So he's got no arm. So he's not fleet of foot...he completes 65% of his passes...that ain't not bad.

Brett Favre to the Jets.

I'm with PimpyLooka on this one. Chad doesn't have the big arm but he can play and he's smart. I would rather have the weak arm, smart QB, then a big arm idiot in Kellen Clemens.

Kellen Clemens equals another 4 and 12 season and Mangini losing his job.

Report Offensive Comment

it should still be his job to lose. the jets should be having a headcoach race instead.

Brett Favre to the Jets.

I knew it, someone had to mention HIM! Come down to the water little kitty!

If the O-line holds up Chad will do fine right up until he gets hurt again. He is one of my all-time favorite Jets quarterbacks, but you have to be concerned about his lack of durability and, to a lesser extent, his weak arm.

Report Offensive Comment

they both suck but if I had to pick I'd go w/ Pennington

Report Offensive Comment

The moment I knew the Jets were done last year was when Pennington had those horrible picks in the preseason game against Minny. He may be a nice guy but he's a bad quarterback and Clemens hasn't proven himself any better. Have fun watching Buffalo/Toronto pass you guys this year.

This just in... the paint on the wall is drying! That's much more interesting!

"The Jets are sad .......... very sad. Look for another losing season "

In the nfl- you don't need a pro-bowl Qb to go deep into the playoffs.
You need a solid D & good running game-

- IN THEORY- with all the off-season aquisitions & maturing of hold-overs....
the Jets should be better in both areas

Like him or hate him- Chad's record speaks for himself-
you CAN win with him- he may not win you games......but you can win
