Richt: Stafford won't leave early

Georgia coach Mark Richt said he knows that quarterback Matthew Stafford is rated at the top of many NFL draft boards even though he's only a junior. But Richt said he expects Stafford to return for his senior season. "I hope that he is the first pick in the draft -- two years from now," Richt said. "You know, I'm sure Matthew is going to have to make a tough decision when the season is over. But I know he came to win a lot of games and to win a lot of championships. He came to play great as a collegian. I'm sure he feels like he hasn't reached his full potential as a college player and as a Georgia Bulldog. He is ready to have a great experience and that's what we're hoping for."

So says you Mark. If this kid has the kind of year that has him as a guaranteed top 5 pick he would be foolish to turn that down.

He is the most overrated QB since David Green!!!!

July 25, 2008  10:08 AM ET

Yeah, we won't know the answer to that question, of whether Stafford'll leave, until the season is over. Even Richt is talking like he hopes he comes back, but I'd still like it either way if Stafford stayed his senior year or left to be drafted high and Joe Cox became the man, then Gray, then Murray/Mettenberger.

Yeah, maybe first round, not top five.

He shouldn't..Georgia QBs stink in the NFL

July 25, 2008  10:54 AM ET

I'm an outsider, but it seems like this guy is average or above average at best. Yet publications talk of his potential as a prototype NFL QB rather than what he's done in college. I hope he proves me and other naysayers wrong this season with exceptional play. He seems like a good kid.

July 25, 2008  11:46 AM ET

average qb at that, and also mark richt is just trying to get him to stay by saying he isnt good enough

July 25, 2008  11:51 AM ET

Mr. Richt should worry about Knowshon Moreno leaving early...that guy is 100% legit and only getting better.

July 25, 2008  11:51 AM ET

I hope he stays after this year people across the country are going to know just how good this kid can be

July 25, 2008  11:52 AM ET

I admit Stafford has not shown his worth statistically. But I think you have to look at other factors when determining the value of a QB. Big Wins , Career Record, etc. . . Stafford is 17-4 as a starter in the SEC, where he began play as a true freshman. That season he took some lumps, his stats were lousy, and yet he was a primary reason that GA beat # 5 Auburn in Jordan Hare (route nontheless), SCored the Go ahead TD against GT in the final minute when GT played in the ACC Championship. And orchestrated an 18 point come from behind victory over VT. His second season all he did was lead a team to an 11-2 record and finish 2nd nationally. He plays in a prostyle offense and the focused running game that Georgia uses can limit both his passing reps and a passing rythm. This might account for some delay in statistical progress. He is just now a junior and look for him to improve markedly. I think this guy is a superstar.

Georgia has a lot of QB's in the pipeline. Staying for his senior season might hurt, if one of those kids behind him transfer out to a 1-AA looking for playing time or one of those highly rated verbals look elsewhere for time.

It would be nice if he stayed for his senior year but the other side of the coin might be more damaging.

July 25, 2008  12:07 PM ET

D.SLIQ: You have a point there. Look at Chris Simms. He didn't do much at Texas but the pro magazines were all over him for what he could be at the NFL level.

It's just something that the prognosticators do.

July 25, 2008  12:44 PM ET

I doubt he would pass up top 5 draft pick money to chill in Athens another year

July 25, 2008  01:21 PM ET

Stafford, and the, IMO, undue hype surrounding him, reminds me A LOT of a situation last year. He is this year's Matt Ryan.

July 25, 2008  01:28 PM ET

It would depend on whether the NFL mandates a salary cap for incoming rookies. If that happens it won't occur until the 2010 draft, so foregoing a forecasted top five pick would mean tens of millions. Anyone would be stupid to pass that up for another year of college, and the possibility of injury, Make enough money to never have to work again now, you can always return to graduate if you want, or need too. At that point its really a business decision which effects the value of his estate. If Stafford wants to experience the ultimate collegiate glory of a national championship, he has the opportunity to do that this season. If he wants all that its up to him.

July 25, 2008  01:47 PM ET

If he left UG(A)Y for the NFL, he would probably have to accept a pay cut. It makes sense for him to stay.

July 25, 2008  02:07 PM ET

The real question is: what will Tebow do? Win another Heisman? Leave early if he has 2 Heismans? Leave early if he doesn't? What will he do in the NFL without a spread option offense to run?

July 25, 2008  02:22 PM ET

He will stay.. you might discuss Tebow if he has a solid year and is in the top 5..

July 25, 2008  02:34 PM ET

Tebow is going to graduate and go to Bible school, that kid is good , but what a clown when it comes to off the field man.

July 25, 2008  03:01 PM ET

Tebow would probably stay. He should go but he will probably pull the Peyton Manning/Matt Leinart defense and say that he loves college and being the big man in the small pond.

That, and I'm not sure if Tebow could play at the next level. He might really be a product of the system.
