Tribune Co. is inviting at least three potential buyers, including Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who each submitted bids for the Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field near or above $1 billion to participate in a second round of proposals, according to a person involved in the process. Several bidders offering between $700 million and $900 million for all the properties have been excluded from the second round, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of nondisclosure agreements governing all talk about the bids.

This would be hilarious...lol. The seventh inning stretch just got a WHOLE LOT more entertaining!

July 25, 2008  06:58 AM ET

Maybe this will put the Cubs over the hump

July 25, 2008  07:07 AM ET

Cuban is passionate about his team. Cuban being an owner could only be GOOD for the Cubs

July 25, 2008  08:19 AM ET

Bad news for Cubs fans.

July 25, 2008  08:25 AM ET

I hope he gets em.

July 25, 2008  08:39 AM ET

Remeber last year when Cuban was "seriously" thinking about buying the Pirates? All he wants is A major league baseball team - first come first serve will suit him.

July 25, 2008  09:00 AM ET

As a Cardinals and Red Sox fan, this scares me more than the Cubs' current record. Cuban wants to win, and will invest heavily in the team to do so. He hasn't won an NBA title, but he turned that franchise around.

July 25, 2008  09:17 AM ET

This would be great for the Cubbies! He is the BEST owner because he cares about winning, since he has enough money. The guy is cool in my book - a bit eccentric but COOL.

July 25, 2008  09:18 AM ET

The cubs will be the Redsox/Yankees of the national league if he gets this team. Spare no expense to put a winner on the field. Even tho Cuban has been burned recently and hasnt spent the cash on the mavs like he used to.

July 25, 2008  09:37 AM ET

I like the guy who evidently signed an agreement not to talk about the bids who then turned right around and started talking about the bids to some idiot reporter....

Regardless of who wins the Cubs, their first order of business should be finding out who the bigmouth is and getting rid of the little snot.

July 25, 2008  10:16 AM ET

Cuban turned the Mavs around and made it a place where players WANTED to come play...hell be good for baseball as well.

What's the first thing any fan says when their team loses..."Why don't they invest in the team to put a winner on the field?" Isn't that what Boston and NY do?

July 25, 2008  10:19 AM ET

The Team owner closest to Bud Selig, besides Brewer owhership[of course], is Jerry Reinsdorf of the White Sox[also owner of the Chicago Bulls],who can't stand Cuban. MLB will give the Tribune Co. something to see that Cuban won't get the Cubs.

July 25, 2008  10:20 AM ET

The Cubbies already invest quite a bit to put a winner out there, they just haven't gotten over the hump yet.

I get why a Cubs fan would like this, but why would anybody else? Yes, he'd probably spend like crazy, justl ike that universally revered owner George Steinbrenner.

July 25, 2008  10:24 AM ET

The last thing MLB needs is a crazy owner who will set up a staff to argue Balls and Strikes at his home arena from film, like he does with his NBA team in Dallas. Leave the game alone, no one wants him messing around and trying to get his home team an unfair advantage like he did in the NBA. Ref's have been quoted as being nervous to make calls and that it has effected the way games get called in Dallas.

July 25, 2008  10:43 AM ET

this is great news for us cubs fans. this guy will spend to get the players and development needed to put us in contenetion regularly. sweeeeeeeet

July 25, 2008  10:44 AM ET

this dude has money steinbrener cant touch!

July 25, 2008  10:46 AM ET

So does the owner ot the Twins, alot of good that does.

July 25, 2008  10:59 AM ET

Cuban should spend a billion dollars on food and medicine for the suffering people in Darfur.

Or, you know, toothpicks for the starving North Koreans.

July 25, 2008  12:07 PM ET

Cuban doesn't understand that Wrigley Field is the star of the Cubs, NOT the owner. Cub fans do NOT want this guy.
