Baltimore's chances for NHL team

A new arena is a poor risk for Baltimore if the city is counting on attracting an NHL or NBA franchise, sports business experts say, but some agree with city leaders that a proposed 18,500-seat venue could be profitable without such an anchor tenant. Neither the NBA nor the NHL offers many relocation or expansion prospects, analysts said, and the presence of basketball and hockey teams in Washington make the odds even longer for Baltimore. Franchise mobility might be greater in the NHL, he added, but the Washington Capitals struggle to sell tickets now, so there's no reason to believe the market could support two hockey teams.

Outside of concerts there is nothing else that can routinely fill a stadium, especially one that will likely have a $300 million+ price tag. If Baltimore isn't going to try and lure another team then I'd say there best bet would be an AFL team.

Too many teams in the general area to even think about a team there. Caps, devils, flyers, rangers and isles. There are far better places to put a team.

Ifs, buts, long odds and no reasons to believe the market could support two hockey teams.

Is this absolutely-nothing-whatsoever-to-do-with-hockey story T&Rs revenge on us for the boycott yesterday?

I doubt it my friend. That would mean that someone is actually reading this rubbish, and if that be the case, then we in trouble. I mean really, how much of this drivel do they expect (or is that expectorate?) to foist upon us?

By the way, making the most tenuous connection (I believe T&R works this way too!) to try to make this relevant at least to some of us, I saw a reissue "Baltimore Skipjacks" (olde minor league team) jersey on eBay with the name Theirrien on it.I believe he played there in the minors. There are a couple there, so you Penguin guys (including Therrien Rocks escpecially0 should go take a look

Would a Baltimore Hockey team have purple jerseys too?

July 25, 2008  09:33 AM ET

The simple fact that this is such an illogical place to put an NHL team...should give us all concern under the Mini Me Method of operendi.

Are you suggesting that our beloved Commissioner Stoopidhead is operating in a vacuum? Operating from behind closed doors where he has no real sense of what to do or whwere/ That he is only interested in money, caring not one cintilla for the game he is slowly ruining?
I am shocked

How about fixing the mess in Florida, and Atlanta and Carolina, and Nashville before, Mr. Midget?

July 25, 2008  10:22 AM ET

I think the devil will need a pair of skates before Baltimore gets an NHL team. But then, with Buttman in charge, that might be a lot sooner than I'd like to think!

Just move the Preds and the Panthers to Baltimore and be done with it! At least you'll have one competitive team and, it will make the stories about ownership and financial troubles go away .... at least for a few months!

July 25, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Why does everyone bring Carolina into this, they're posting profits now. Why not get rid of the Islanders as they have basically the worst operated team in the league and I'd gladly get rid of Atlanta and the Panthers in South Florida. With how close Baltimore is to Washington D.C., maybe the NHL could do a few test run games with the Caps to see if they'd support it or blow it of. The Hurricanes are turning it around and the Lightning have a pretty strong fan base, so those are probably the only two teams in the South East at the moment that don't need anything, so stop dragging them in this conversation when you're in Phoenix who has more trouble if I recall than the Hurricanes.

It would make no sense to put a team in Baltimore, way too many teams around. The commish is still too worried about getting a team in KC and/or Vegas. Maybe after that he'll think about Baltimore.

July 25, 2008  10:35 AM ET

Is it just me or are some of these cities partly to blame for helping Mini-Me overexpand and ruin the great sport of professional hockey? I mean if some city up and decides they want to build an 18000 seat stadium so they can make some more money or something and then tries to get a hockey team to play in it so it doesn't go to waste doesn't this fit perfectly into mini-me's plan of pushing hockey into "non-traditional" markets? It's far easier for him to try and sell putting a team in a city that already has a stadium than putting one in a city that while it may not have one built would support the team out the wazoo. How much of the blame for over-expansion falls on the shoulders of the people who build new stadiums without teams in the hopes of attracting one?

MaplePenguin,
This is all of the same stuff I've been on about. I mentioned that I may have to go back and write (on a hockey site I used to write for) the "Dump Bettman thingy for real.
Hence my petition on my blog......the link is on one of the threads from yesterday, or if someone would be good enough to repost it

You know, you don't have to move right across town. Nashville and Florida come to mind when mentioning NHL teams folding.

Already did. Sorry, it's still too early and I've yet to have any coffee. Didn't realize that was a bit of a repeated ramble of previous stuff. Now to find some java.

Did anyone else see the comments Paul Kelly made earlier about having more canadian teams? Bet that didn't sit well in Munchkin Land!
