Donovan admits Euro interest

With growing rumors swirling that Landon Donovan is set for a move to Europe, Los Angeles Galaxy star and U.S. national team captain confirmed that he is more interested in a move than ever, but was careful to quell suggestions that a move was imminent. "Competitively I have that itch to go test it," Donovan said of moving to Europe. "And now, as opposed to when I was younger, I feel like I'm ready. Physically I'm ready, mentally, psychologically I'm ready. I know I could handle it, so now I'm having that itch to go try it again. "When i was younger, I admittedly wasn't ready."

This guy cannot play overseas, he can barely play in the MLS. Good luck playing in the Danish 3rd Division.

I am not a Landon fan but I think he's finally matured enough mentally to give it a shot. I just want to see him go and see where he really is at. He's probably someone who can go to the Dutch Eridivise and build a solid career for himself.

gangsters- erm, 12 goals in 14 games equates barely being able to play in the MLS??? i wouldnt mind seeing him go to a dutch team, but i could see a mid table EPL team picking him up.... possibly even a mid table german team

Spain and Italy are most likely not interested.... Italy is tough enough for Yanks to break, and Spain has limitations to the extreme on foreign spots...

Portugal or France could call but i dont see the move there... anything could happen

Y didn't he admit he missed mommy instead

July 25, 2008  09:39 AM ET

Have you seen him play? This guy misses more bunnies in front of the net than anyone in the league. How good would Beckham look if he had Angel, DeRosario, or Toja up front. Landon is just a push and run type of player, and should be out on the flank. I love his speed, but his soccer IQ is frustrating because I want him to do well, but he doesn't have the technical ability to play up front. I hope he does well, but I don't see it.

I'm not sure about Germany. Dude did leave Bayern Leverkeusen twice, and both times he claimed not to like the country and it's culture. I can't see another Bundesliga team taking a chance on him.

A mid table EPL team does make some sense. Maybe, Fulham? They do like Americans.

July 25, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Too late. He'll flop in Europe, couldn't handle the stress of riding the pine at Leverkusen. He's a **** anyway, wouldn't want him carrying an American passport around other countries..

I understand the Euro is stronger than the dollar now, perhaps that's his motivation.

July 25, 2008  10:12 AM ET

I can't see him anywhere in England, given how much he avoids the physical aspects of the game. Put him in the right situation, and he'll do fine--and I say that as a perpetual Landon basher. I've just never thought he's anywhere near the hype.

July 25, 2008  10:15 AM ET

It's true, he didn't like German culture because we look down on little girly men who cry and whine about everything.

Truth is, in three months he played in 7 Bundesliga games, started 2 of them and started against Liverpool in the Champions League (a game which he royaly screwed up). He was receiving his chances, would have continued receiving his chances, but he is a quitter, in the finest of fashions. He would be about as welcome in Germany as Clint Mathis.

Like him or hate him he's been huge for the growth of the sport in the US.

The only service LanDo gets is from Beckham. Imagine what he could do if some other players could open the field for him. I see a great partnership with Peter Crouch heading balls down to his feet :)

Like I said, he's a flank type of player. He could run past almost every defender anywhere in the world, just don't ask him to do more than that, especially in a good Euro league. Frankie Hejduk has made a career out of running into space and crossing the ball, and Landon is a much better player than Hejduk.

July 25, 2008  10:37 AM ET

LD is much a much better player than what he's given credit for! He's done a lot for US soccer but, inexplicably, a lot of people love to hate him! The truth is LD would fit in nicely and thrive with a number of teams over in Euro where the talent level is better than what he had to play with here!

No matter, though! Might be a bit too late for him!

July 25, 2008  10:51 AM ET

His quotes should be re-written to reflect the truth. Something like this:

"No one has sadi my name out loud since Beckham arrived and Michael Bradley is quickly taking over the national team with his play and leadership, so I need to go to Europe, too. Also, Carrottop the GM says he wants to bring in Zidane so I gotta go."

July 25, 2008  10:54 AM ET

Gangsters... I don't think football IQ is the problem for LD. I think it's mental. He loses his cool and is seriously jekyll and hyde in big games. He does miss in front of goal a lot, but I contend that is a mental issue. Truthfully, maybe a move to Europe somewhere (not the EPL... I actually think with his speed and dribbling that a mid-table Spanish or French team might be a good option) where he's not expected to carry an entire team and an entire league on his shoulders every week might give him the opportunity to keep his mind focused inward on his game. On the other hand, he might just crack under the pressure. But he's playing as well as he's ever played in MLS right now, so I respect his willingness to give it a go, and I think it speaks to a growing maturity that he admits he wasn't ready before. As a USMNT fan, I perk up at any hint that Landon might do something that causes him to realize his potential.

July 25, 2008  10:55 AM ET

I just realized I said 'it's not IQ, it's mental'... I meant to say 'it's not IQ, it's mental toughness'. I'm not an idiot.. I swear.

July 25, 2008  11:12 AM ET

Gangsters, He ain't just a "flank player". Unlike the Travelocity Gnome, he is meant to "roam alone". He's got the skills to play anywhere on the field.

His league-leading stats (12 honies and 7 helpers) make us all wonder what he'd be capable of if he really were mentally present for the full 90. No question but Becks and Buddle have helped him hugely by distracting the attention of opposing defenders in the final third.

Maybe he just wants to get away and go somewhere where he isn't universally referred to as "Landycakes".

LD needs to go to Europe, nothing more needs to be said.

He was a young kid and couldn't handle the previous pressure. Now he's matured and is ready to test the water. I don't even want to discuss how he disappears in the biggest games and shies away from physical play. LD needs to be pushed out of his comfort zone more, and a switch to Europe will do just that. No one there is going to kiss his arse.

He's got more potential than we would like to admit. For a bunch of people who bash the heck out of him we sure do have a lot riding on him producing for the USMNT. Hate him or love him, when LD does well the US does well.
