Two co-defendants of the disgraced N.B.A. referee Tim Donaghy were sentenced Thursday, and legal experts said their sentences indicated that Donaghy was likely to face a stiff punishment when he appears in court Tuesday. In federal court in Brooklyn, United States District Judge Carol Amon sentenced one of Donaghy's co-defendants, Thomas Martino, to 12 months and a day in prison. Federal sentencing guidelines suggested that he should have received 8 to 14 months. The other co-defendant, James Battista, was sentenced to 15 months. The guidelines suggested he should have received 10 to 16 months. The guidelines in Donaghy's case suggest a prison sentence of roughly 27 to 33 months.

Let's start the bidding wars. I give him 30 months and 1 day.

And what the hell is wrong with that judge giving people a sentence with months and days?!!! Does he like shoot free throws to determine the sentence?

Many states have county and municipal jails that are limited to sentences of a year or under. Even with a federal rap, you can try to do your time locally in one of those jails where in theory the other offenders are short timers and less violent.

Giving a year and a day is the courts way of saying you absolutely will serve your time in a federal prison.

He needs to go to jail for being a very bad boy.

July 25, 2008  12:19 PM ET

2 1/2 years is plenty enough time for him to write his book. I don't think we've heard the last from Mr. Donaghy.

July 25, 2008  02:06 PM ET

Less then 3 years is all you get for messing the NBA? That's crazy. So if he made millions and kept it somewhere then he could come back very rich in 3 years and also maybe write a book.

July 25, 2008  02:07 PM ET

Yeah Hllywd, I think he'll write a book totally insulting the NBA like Phil Jackson did about the Lakers dissing Kobe...

July 25, 2008  02:59 PM ET

Hard time ain't the only thing hard thing he will be facing. Don't drop the soap, Timmy.

July 25, 2008  03:00 PM ET

Thats all

July 25, 2008  05:47 PM ET

Doesn't this guy just look like he'll be KING OF THE YARD in the clink?

July 25, 2008  06:33 PM ET

Is that "HARD" time as in a cellmate that has been imprisoned for years with no ---- ???

July 25, 2008  10:51 PM ET

I'm sure he's going to FACE-ing a HARD something in prison. Can you say, "Squeal, bee-yatch!"

July 26, 2008  12:22 AM ET

Just remember where he's going, inmates bet their last smokes on basketball games and he will face the music I have no doubt. Most of us wouldn't last 5 min. in there just think if they already don't like you
