Rollins in Phillies doghouse
Charlie Manuel has two rules. Two. Hustle, and be on time. In about seven weeks, Jimmy Rollins has broken both rules. First, he didn't hustle. Yesterday, he wasn't on time. When his team was scratching to stay atop the National League East, Rollins was on the bench for all but one useless at-bat, when he grounded to third on the first pitch he saw to end the 3-1 win by - drumroll, please - your division leaders, the New York Mets. Since the 2007 National League MVP apparently doesn't understand them, Manuel's rules mean you don't dog it to first base even when you know you're going to be out, and you don't arrive at the ballpark only an hour before the game starts. What happened yesterday morning apparently was this: Rollins opted against taking the team bus from Manhattan to Shea Stadium, in Queens, for the final tilt of the three-game series. The first pitch was scheduled for just after noon, an unusually early start that was meant to accommodate children from camps who got to attend the game. Rollins decided to drive to the ballpark, and he said he had left 10 minutes after the team, figuring he could outmaneuver a slow bus in traffic and beat it to Shea. He was wrong. Rollins apparently arrived about 11 a.m., and rather than give Manuel a heads-up that he was going to be tardy, as he had once this season, he decided to deal with the consequences whenever he did make it into the clubhouse. Manuel called Rollins into his office, stuck to his rules, and benched the shortstop. Rollins pinch-hit with two outs in the top of the ninth. By that time, it was way too late.

Man this boy should have been on the bus. No excuses. Probably gave some stupid excuse, like always. Never ceases to amaze me. Just another example of the trouble that is created.

Perfect example of a player presenting himself as a "me first" kinda guy. Maybe after some personal reflection "riding" the bench might help, or not.

At least Bruntlet Played well.
It could be worse, he could act like the showboating ***hole in the other dugout. I thought I was watching a basketball game a few times this week.

Wow, anyone who would choose to drive in NYC rather than hitch a free ride deserves to be pooped on. What was he thinking? He's a great player, but man, use your **** brain!

Didn't Randy Wolff pick up a girl on the subway out to Shea a few yeas ago? Much better move than sitting in traffic on the Grand Central.

exactly...if all I had to do was show up to get a massage and then put my iniform on after a trainer taped me up so I could go swing a bat and play some catch prior to the game...knowing that I have hired help to handle all of life's responsibilitiies (grocerty shopping, paying the bills, getting the kids to their activities on time)I think I could get to the game on time.
Anyone who thinks the mgr is wrong here is just missing the point. we need more old school thinkers like this.

He didn't hustle on the basepaths more than once this season, too. He really came up small on this one, throwing in some BS about traffic. Boys make excuses. Men take responsibility. We need you to be a man, Jim, not a boy. I would have an ironclad rule that if you ever arrive late to a game, you ride the bus the rest of the season. If you can't handle the responsibility of getting to the ballpark on time, we can help you with that. We have a foolproof solution to your problem. It's called the bus.
