Tigers reluctant to acquire Burnett

07:26 AM ET 07.25 | Tigers officials have made pitching their priority while canvassing ballparks this month. The Tigers were among the 10 or more clubs that scouted Wednesday night's game between the Blue Jays and Orioles, teams that already have made pitchers available on the market. Toronto right-hander A.J. Burnett started that game, but it's not believed the Tigers are actively pursuing him. Burnett is making $12 million this year, and the Tigers are reluctant to add to what was a $138-million payroll Opening Day. Baltimore closer George Sherrill would be intriguing to the Tigers if Freddy Dolsi is unavailable for any length of time, but the price tag on Sherrill, a left-hander, is expected to be high.

Timing, location, and money.

It is a nice thought but there is no way we could pull it off. Porcello is untouchible, Joyce is playing with the club, Tata is on and off injuries, what prospects do we have left? Iorg and Holliman? While they are good the Jays aren't just blowing up to rebuild, they just underperformed and they wont let pitchers go for peanuts. And while Detroits farm is better than people thought after the Cabrera/Willis and Renteria trades we would end up even worse off losing the rest for a guy that is never happy or a part of a team everywhere he goes...

July 25, 2008  08:13 AM ET

Not gonna happen... I would put more rumor to truth on this one...

July 25, 2008  08:18 AM ET

Tigers need more pitching, but this is not the guy. The most wins he has ever won in a year? 12... Lifetime he is barely above .500. I think they need a consistent 5 starter, but this is not an improvement over Nate Robertson...

Get Bedard or Maddux, not this guy. Let the Yankees pay too much for him.

July 25, 2008  08:24 AM ET

bi- they wont' trade the guy within their division. And I think they have seen him enough to know to avoid him. The man has more issues than National Geographic...

July 25, 2008  08:25 AM ET

Pull the trigger....

July 25, 2008  08:42 AM ET

Well, Since Donterlle is back in the minors maybe they would consider him a prospect? We'll trade him...

July 25, 2008  09:45 AM ET

I don't think Burnett is going anywhere. His option issue is too big a risk for anyone to give up any serious prospects.

July 25, 2008  10:16 AM ET

They do need pitching pretty bad, but this is not the guy to go for. Bedard maybe, but not Burnett. And by the way, the Tigers aren't .500 anymore. They are the hottest team in baseball over the last 40 games, get your facts right.

July 25, 2008  10:30 AM ET

I could care less about Burnett, but I would like to see the Jays revert back to the older unis for good.

July 25, 2008  10:50 AM ET

If AJ signs with another team in the off season, that team has to give the Jays two first round picks. The Jay's obviously can't let him go for less than that. I don't know why a team would make a trade for him - he's injury prone and a career .500 pitcher. I'm praying each night that someone will take him becasue I'd love to ditch that contract... Maybe they'll take JP with him as a throw in.

Also - the powder blues are money!!!!

July 25, 2008  11:09 AM ET

This team signed Dontrelle Willis to a huge deal even though he's been awful. Burnett's career high in wins is 12 and amazingly he'll beat that this year. What a surprise. Please take him, Detroit. Thanks.

July 25, 2008  11:26 AM ET

They have spent enough money.. they need to coach who they have now.

July 25, 2008  12:56 PM ET

Whatever it takes to get Todd Jones off this team. His ERA is over 5. Yeah, that's the closer I want in the 9th with a 1 run lead. Batting practice is all Jones can throw. If this guy can help in any capacity, let's go for it.

July 25, 2008  06:02 PM ET

After their failed attempts to secure the pennant better to lay back and not do anything foolish - as before !!!
Sincerely, Dontrelle Willis

Manny Ramirez will sign with the Yankees in the off season if the sox don't pick up his option

July 25, 2008  09:35 PM ET

His contract is too high with too much baggage to come along with it.
