How much is Ichiro worth?

Ichiro is in the final season of a four-year, $44 million contract, and everyone wants to know what happens next. Both sides have been mum, but there are no indications the Mariners and their All-Star center fielder will settle on a contract extension before the July 31 trade deadline. It looks as if Ichiro, who has spent his entire U.S. career in Seattle, will test the free agent waters, and those waters figure to be warm again this winter despite a larger pool of premier free agents than in the past couple of years.

I could see him going to the Dodgers or the Giants.

A respectable person, Ichiro wants to be financially respected and have a chance to win. If Seattle keeps progressing he stays in seattle for fair market value. If Bavasi does makes any more stupid moves, and lets face it, that is likely, Ichiro is gone at seasons end arod style: aka, nothing in return for one of the greatest players in the game.

"....leading off for the Yankees and playing right field...."
After signing Sheffield and passing on Vlad Guerrero a few years ago,
jeez I can't believe George was that dumb, calmer heads will prevail and the Yankees will sign Ichiro to a long term deal, probably five or six years. Ichiro represents more of the team-oriented, multi-talented, old-time National League style of baseball that the Yankees were winning all those titles with in the late '90's. He would be a welcome, stabilizing influence both on the field and in the clubhouse. Besides, George is a shrewd businessman and he knows that Ichiro will pay for himself by the increased franchising revenues from all the Yankees clothing and souvenirs sold to Ichiro's passionate fans in Japan.

The M's never pay for talent. It was great watching the cat when we had him.

If Bavasi lets him go that will be the stupidest move yet. More stupid then giving Richie all that money. Worse then giving Washburn 8.3 million to lose his first 6 games with a +10 ERA. It will be worse becasue Ichiro is the heart and sole of that team. He can't let him test Free agency, and if he trades him then he needs to get another leader in return. That would be a stupid move though because the Mariner's "next Griffey", Adam Jones is not ready for the bigs yet, but will eventually replace whoever is shoved there post ichiro

Sign him Seattle he will be dangerous any where else. Go to Boston with Dice -K yes sir!!!!

June 13, 2007  04:25 PM ET

Suzuki will never go to Bostun...his ego would not work well with the 50 other egomaniacts already there

June 13, 2007  04:35 PM ET

He will go to the Mets, Dodgers, or Yanks.

his value is ridiculously high
he can play all 3 OF pos at an amazingly great level
he's got a cannon for an arm
broke the hit record
and last time i checked his was only a tad bit slower than jose reyes.

he's only going to play in a city that he feels can keep him in the asian media and win and pay him well. that being said look for a stay out west with LA SF or out east to the NYM or NYY. any other place would really surprise me

Seattle will pony up and sign him. It would $$ devistating to not have him on the field. There is a reason why Seattle merchandise is one of the top sellers year in and year out, win or loss. Besides, what would we do with all the left over Icri-rolls?
