NBA's OKC name options

The NBA has filed for trademark rights to six nicknames for Oklahoma City's franchise -- Barons, Bison, Energy, Marshalls (spelled with two Ls), Thunder and Wind, according to the U.S. patent and trademark office. The filings were Monday. All six trademark requests were filed with the NBA Development League as the "owner." It's uncertain why the NBADL was part of the trademark process. KOCO-TV has reported that "according to a source close to the ownership group," the name will be Thunder. Thunder won a fan vote on NewsOK.com. All the names, except for Marshalls, were top picks by readers, as well.

Hank - you answered your own question.
Think about it - to have "wind", you need a "fan". Hence, the picture of the "fan" in the picture. Fans blow the air that provides the wind.

July 26, 2008  09:44 AM ET

That picture is too funny.... Nothing about him says OKC or fan of OKC. It's just some guy working at a sporting goods store because he's a closet homosexual and he's trying to gain the respect of his father. Ginger kids.....ewwwww

July 26, 2008  09:57 AM ET

All this talk about "Wind" gave me an idea for a better name for the Oklahoma team.
They should call themselves the "Kites", since kites fly in windy weather. Then they will be the Oklahoma City Kites, or the OCKs.
If you refer to them as the Clay's Oklahoma City Kites - since they are owned by Clay Bennett - then they become the ****.

snicker, snicker. 2nd ginger kid jab I've seen today

July 26, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Oh - the abbreviation was censored - for some reason - hehe.
Anyway, if they call themselves the Kites, then they become Clay's Oklahoma City Kites, or the C. O. C. K.s.

Ha, Semi-funny

July 26, 2008  10:02 AM ET

These are horrible possibilities, for example Wind sounds like a WNBA name and the Energy is actually the name of a D-League team.

July 26, 2008  10:15 AM ET

yakisu21- BWAHAHAHAHA.

he does however look uncomfortably similar to Jason Garrett.

I'd go with barons and everyone wear a baron davis beard. fun.

July 26, 2008  11:07 AM ET

how about the ..............

"where are we going to go next when we have 4000 people a night in oaklahoma?"

July 26, 2008  11:30 AM ET

These are as bad (or worse, in the case of "Wind") as the Utah Jazz. It makes much more sense to call them the OKC Supersonics, given the city's long history in the advancement of aeronautics.
