Brushback stokes Joba-Youkilis feud

The pitch was mid-90s and next to Kevin Youkilis' batting helmet. The message was clear: Take this Joba and shove it! Yankees ace-in-the-making Joba Chamberlain and Boston's All-Star first baseman have some bad blood in their history and the righthander's brushback pitch in the seventh inning of Friday night's game brought it back to a roiling boil. The 2-0 pitch put Youkilis on the deck. He sprang to his feet almost as quickly as he went down and came up screaming. Chamberlain stood on the mound unfazed and up a strike in the count because the ball struck Youkilis' bat. Home plate umpire Marty Foster got between the two and issued a warning to both benches. "It was right at my --- head," Youkilis clearly said to Foster. "He has great command until Youk gets in there," Boston manager Terry Francona said of Chamberlain.

July 26, 2008  09:02 AM ET

i believe that dead possum has magnetic properties

July 26, 2008  09:02 AM ET

mettle = throwing at a guys head for the third time...gotcha.

July 26, 2008  09:06 AM ET

Sucks to be him

July 26, 2008  09:10 AM ET

Youkilis is a ****... I dont care what you say RedSoxBabe, you know and I know it, red sox pitchers throw at yankee batters all the time. It is just merely Youkilis getting his, nothing more, nothing less. He didnt hit him, just "buzzed his tower"

July 26, 2008  09:12 AM ET

Yeah Joba is really going to put a guy on base in the 7th with a one run lead. Makes total sense.

The end result was pretty funny though. He gets knocked to the ground, but all he gets out of it is a strike again him.

TMZ, I'd love to see you stand in the box while someone throws baseballs nearly 100 MPH at your head. It's obvious it's intentional, which is BS. You're messing with someone's life, and his livelihood. Youk should charge the mound and beat his ****.

I have no problem with pitching inside, or even brushback pitches, but you don't point it at someone's head. I'd love to see the Sox plunk Gay-Rod and Peter today.

July 26, 2008  09:17 AM ET

It was a stupid decision... it will give us the passion we need today. Brush back is one thing but at the head? stupid..

July 26, 2008  09:26 AM ET

Another winning hate related posting by fictionnation..........:/ Nowonder there is so much BS between fans.........

there will come a day when joba tosses a no-hitter against the sawx, and it would have been a perfect game, but for having had plunked youk in the bean in the 7th inning. we can speculate on that, starting now, or simply wait for that moment to occur. either way, i don't mind. we have a good 10 years of these occurrances ahead of us. should make a good full length dvd one day. we will see, in ultra high def, actual clam chunks of youks chowder lunch, scattering out of that beaver pelt as he flails from the high cheese. he stands tall in the box, gives that pleading "what the hey?" look to both the mound and the ump, the camera pans the dugout. francona shrugs his shoulders, manny chuckles into his hand. joba wins another cy young award. somewhere a possom weeps over unrequited love. life goes on.

Great baseball game..No way is he trying to hit him in that situation. Had to laugh at the way he bailed out and his swing on on a pitch away and out of the strike zone for strike three...A whole lot of hitters looked at strikes..The pitch for strike three to Lowell had been called a strike all game, not sure what his problem was..probably just frustrated..

July 26, 2008  09:33 AM ET

Red Sox pitchers have been hitting Yankee hitters for a long time now. I'm glad we have someone that throws some heat inside.

If he was trying to hit him in the head, then it's wrong. But it's about time the Yanks start throwing inside.

July 26, 2008  09:35 AM ET

What a crybaby

July 26, 2008  09:36 AM ET

I agree. The brush back pitch as well as outright plunking a hitter is a part of baseball, but you don't go at someone's melon.

July 26, 2008  09:38 AM ET

Yeah, I'm all for throwing inside and brushing people back when necessary, but throwing at a guy's head crosses the line

July 26, 2008  09:39 AM ET

I never realized how much Kevin Youkilis resembles actor John Malkovich until now.

July 26, 2008  09:44 AM ET

I'm a Yankees fan and no way do you want to hit someone in a 1-0 game. However, I recognize the history betweent he two players and as Coletrain noted before, the Sox used to hit the Yankees (Jeter, Soriano) in the past and no one responded. With all this said, Joba does have great control.

July 26, 2008  09:48 AM ET

just a little lower next time, no beanballs!!

Hitters are not Prima-Donnas, although they think so. When baseball was still a game, pitchers like Drysdale and Gibson did the same thing and got away with it becauae it was part of the game. These sissies now come to the plate, dig in and act like they own the plate. The way to get back at a pitcher that throw a brushback pitch is to hit a line drive right back at the pitcher. What's that you say, you can only hit the ball to left center or because you are a pull hitter to can't hit the ball up the middle. Take some batting lessons from Rod Carew or Tony Qwinn.
