Rodriguez: Plenty of Michigan QBs

Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez prides himself on being open and sharing. But when it comes to strategy, he knows where to stop himself. "Somebody asked the question: How many guys will actually touch the ball at quarterback? Good question," Rodriguez said at Big Ten media days on Friday. "I hadn't thought about that. We'll have to figure that out in August. It could be pretty interesting -- this year, anyway." The leading contenders to start are redshirt freshman Steven Threet, who took most of the No. 1 snaps in the spring, and walk-on Nick Sheridan. But then there's freshman Justin Feagin, a multi-faceted, athletic quarterback, usual running back Carlos Brown -- "He missed so much of spring when he sliced his finger so there's unknowns with it," Rodriguez said -- and apparently a bevy of others.

What he is really saying is that just about any offensive player with the talent to make an offensive move is probably going to get several direct snaps one way or another this year.

I thought Threet was the guy.

I thought Threet was the guy.

July 26, 2008  10:14 AM ET

Hmmm, Richey rod trying to to confused the "vest" already. What a guy!

July 26, 2008  10:46 AM ET

Michigan , whether you love 'em, hate 'em, or just love college football, will be one of the most interesting stories in football this season.

July 26, 2008  11:01 AM ET

eyeswideopen...

you got that right. Michigan is such a huge unknown that just watching what happens will either confirm they do suck or that many severely underestimated the team (which is to UM's advanatage). August will be crucial.

as for Threet. He isn't the guy.....yet. He is in the front running. Summer practice will further define who will get the starting position. And who knows, there might be two who share the duties depending on the situation. Carlos Brown has the skills but not sure if he has the mental ability to learn and execute.

One thing is for sure. From what I know and heard from people close to the program and from the kids themselves, they have bought into the RR/Barwis program. They are getting stronger and faster. And they are a TIGHT cohesive unit. The crap that Boren spewed is nonesense. These kids are itching to get onto the field and prove everyone wrong. I hope they do and then some but I am realistic that it might be a very painful year (hopefully not ND 07 painful).

GO BLUE!

"Prides himself on being open and sharing..." I guess that whole W. Virgina thing never happened then!

July 26, 2008  11:13 AM ET

Rodregez, " We have plenty of QB's at Michigan, they're just invisible"

July 26, 2008  11:35 AM ET

put feagin in asap threet is too slow

July 26, 2008  12:04 PM ET

Well Warden, I think you've got it mostly right, though I don't believe kids can actually get appreciably "faster." I'm not totally sold on the tight and cohesive unit stuff....we'll see. But I do believe UM has lots of kids with skills and a ton of pride. I am not a RicheyRod proponent, but his presence does make it very interesting. By the time OSU and UM line up this November we'll have a much better idea who is who and what is what.

July 26, 2008  12:41 PM ET

So what he is saying is that he has no clue. Sounds like anyone that can throw a football has a chance. I guess OSU got all the players and all UM has is talk. This guy is bad for UM. He has no integrity whatsoever...just a disgrace to BO and Loyd. How many losses to the "Vest" before he is out?

July 26, 2008  01:28 PM ET

I wonder if even whoever wins the job this year will even play next year because RR might want to play his quarterbacks that he recruited, like Shavodrick Beaver or Kevin Newsome.

July 26, 2008  01:56 PM ET

no mikey vick will be the new qb

July 26, 2008  02:25 PM ET

It's not generally known, but Rich-Rod has some college elegibility left. I think he plans to enroll in some courses and take over the quarterback job himself. ;)

July 26, 2008  03:39 PM ET

Don't matter who they put at Quarteback they aren't beating the Bucks...

July 26, 2008  06:03 PM ET

Michigan is the most overrated team in college football history. They have less National Championships since MSU joined the Big Ten than MSU themselves!!!! Look it up........Go Blow!

July 26, 2008  09:14 PM ET

We all know that State swallows and their cheerleaders graze on the football field. I don't like RR for running all the white players out of MICHIGAN but I hate state more. So **** siafu so one of the cows from state can do you.

July 26, 2008  09:14 PM ET

Ben-d over

July 26, 2008  11:22 PM ET

Does anyone think that "**** - Rod" would be the coach if "BO" were alive today? I think not.
