Bears interested in Simms

Chris Simms is expected to report today for the first day of training camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. How long he stays with the team remains to be seen. A rift between Simms and coach Jon Gruden has developed since the quarterback last was on the field before suffering a nearly fatal spleen injury in September 2006. Simms has made no secret he wants off the pirate ship, and the Bears have long been mentioned as a possible landing spot. But at what price? The Bucs are carrying five quarterbacks on their roster, including ex-Bear Brian Griese and disgruntled starter Jeff Garcia.

Bears should be interested in any qb that is available, but they've stuck to their guns for 2 seasons. Hard to believe they will finally make a move now.

Simms is better than Grossman/Orton combo.

July 26, 2008  10:00 AM ET

Again: other brokedown QB, who should really think about his own best interests after his horrifying injury. BTW, before that, he was not doing well. Of course, all this means that he's a perfect fit for the place where QBs go to die. Dumb *****.

Mr.Whistler

Yes, and under the Bears' fine management, he will continue to s uck.

July 26, 2008  10:40 AM ET

Simms is just not a pirate.

July 26, 2008  10:41 AM ET

i wouldnt mind picking up the kid cause behind orton and grossman, we have 2 rookies...so i would use him...

ok so what if he had a serious injury..he's healed..the kid needs a chance..and jon gruden needs to get rid of a few QBs

especially if he ends up picking up brett friggin favre....

July 26, 2008  10:59 AM ET

Simm's spleen ruptures and has to have emergency surgery to save his life. Basically he takes one for the team. "Chucky" now hates his QB...something isn't right with this story.

July 26, 2008  11:11 AM ET

Would love to see SImms to the Bears, IMHO Grossman and Orton are painful to watch! I really mean it, when they drop back I just have these "now what" thoughts.......

July 26, 2008  11:16 AM ET

I hope the Bears don't give away a draft pick for him. The Bucs will have to release him anyway, and soon.

July 26, 2008  12:03 PM ET

The Bucs should sign Favre, ship Simms to the Bears and cut Jeff Garcia. Hopefully, Garcia will end up with the Vikings to mentor TJ.

Sounds good to me.

Simms is a pirate, he's just not a Tampa Bay pirate!

July 26, 2008  01:17 PM ET

Bears should go after SImms or Garcia, either is a huge upgrade to what they have.

July 26, 2008  01:26 PM ET

With their abysmal failure over the years to draft a QB, the Bears have to resort to picking up other team's cast offs! What choice do they have, right?

July 26, 2008  02:08 PM ET

@ least they wouldn't have to pay him much

As a Texas Longhorns fan, I always felt Chris Simms was not as good as Major Applewhite, and we don't even need to mention Vince Young. The best quarterback Chicago has had in the past 20 years was Jim McMahon, and he was not hall of fame worthy. It's like watching the Miami Dolphins with Dan Marino and no running game good enough to go with him. A decent quarterback might have beaten the Colts 2 years ago in the Super Bowl. It is time for the Bears to figure out the importance of the quarterback position.
