Red Sox getting rid of Manny?

The Red Sox have had it with Manny Ramirez. Manny has punched his ticket out of town. It's over. O-VA. Adios, amigo. Good night, Irene. Turn out the lights. Last night's 1-0 loss to the Yankees (think they could have used Manny?) was the proverbial last worthless evening. Ramirez sealed his fate with the club yesterday afternoon. After longtime enabler Terry Francona filled out a lineup card with Manny batting fourth, the Sox made an announcement that Manny could not play in the biggest game of the season. Seems there were problems with his right knee. Manny was a late scratch. It was extraordinary. In the past, management and the manager would do handstands to excuse Manny's strange acts. No more. This time, the manager - apparently confident there's nothing wrong with the slugger - put Manny's name in the lineup, then sat and waited for Manny to pull himself out of the lineup. Manny complied. Never concerned with wins or losses, Manny told Brad Mills he was unable to play and took himself out of the batting order for the (thus far) biggest game of the season.

July 26, 2008  11:28 AM ET

yea the mets like to over pay aging outfielders

July 26, 2008  11:29 AM ET

Hey Yankees....sign the bum, this could REALLY be good for baseball!!

July 26, 2008  11:39 AM ET

Yes, the Yanks should get him!

July 26, 2008  11:50 AM ET

the yanks already took care of their needs for a righty outfielder, so yeah, manny will get to the mets or DH for texas

July 26, 2008  12:07 PM ET

GOOD bye MANNY... doesn't break my heart any at all i hope that he misses the next 2 games.. he is a punk and shouldn't play anyways..

July 26, 2008  12:08 PM ET

Yankees don't need a useless player, we have enough of them already... besides we just got a great outfielder

July 26, 2008  12:14 PM ET

this is mannys version of a hold out. they do it all the time in the nfl i aint saying its right im just saying that manny will until he gets a new contract just keep having "knee problems" during every big game. and when they do force him to play he'lll do what he did against the yankees before the all-star break and just sit back and take three pitches right down the middle then go sit back down. like i said i dont approve of this but being a yankee fan i can't complain

Gene Hackman said it best in the Replacements; "Winners want the ball".

Manny is just another spoiled overweight ballplayer who wants things his way. Terry should sit him until Manny comes to him and asks to be put back in the lineup, then make him sit another week, just to give the knee time to heal (wink, wink).

It may well be time to call Manny on his BS MrMiyagiJr.

A holdout is in the offseason and if you don't report you don't get paid. Ramirez is being paid 20 million dollars and his behaviour is inexcusable.

July 26, 2008  01:11 PM ET

I still think Manny will be back in Boston next year

July 26, 2008  01:12 PM ET

If he could be traded to a team thats bad so the deal wont haunt us come playoffs do it especilly if people offer good prospects. Then use those prospects to trade for Matt Holliday or Jason Bay

While I'm not defending Manny as such, I would like to point out that I also don't trust anything that Danny S. writes... he's every bit as arrogant as Manny at about one-ten-billionth the talent. Shaughnessy is a bitter, bitter man who delights in the negative aspects of everything. He is one of the guys who give sportswriting a bad name -- he really should move over to the Herald, it's where he belongs.

Without Manny, Ortiz is pretty much ineffective.

July 26, 2008  01:33 PM ET

Exactly KG Fan. If I were Boston, i would trade him to almost anyone not in the AL East for the best package available.

im not saying its an actual hold out. i was just saying that it has the same meaning as a holdout. Mannys basically saying im not playing until you give me more money in the form of a new contract.

Funny what a pennant race does for everyones sense of humor in BeanTown. Manny being Manny just is not that acceptable anymore....Manny, Veritek getting old, Ellsbury and Crisp not up to it, think there will be some major changes next year...Great pitching though, it will CYA for a while....Nothing the guy does, or does not do, should surprise anyone...not anymore..
