First-year football coach David Cutcliffe scored a big hometown recruiting coup for Duke late this week with a commitment from Desmond Scott, a Durham Hillside running back. Scott, who's rated the fourth-best prospect overall in the Class of 2009 in North Carolina by rivals.com, previously had committed to Rutgers. But his father, Tony Scott, said Desmond was excited about the direction of Duke's program under Cutcliffe. Desmond Scott is 5-foot-9 and 183 pounds and is a teammate of quarterback Corey Gattis, who committed to Duke last month. Tony Scott said Cutcliffe plans to use Desmond as an all-purpose back and split him out at wide receiver.

Article of the day! "Fourth best in NC!" "5'9", 183!" Woo hoo!!!

It bodes well for this young man that he's a good runner. He'll spend the next 4 years running for his life.

Duke? Duke knows football? I thought they were into date rape and field hockey of another sort!

July 26, 2008  12:22 PM ET

YIPPEE SKIPPEE!...Good luck kid.

This kid must know he is not going to make it to the league, he must be going for the education. Its a great school and he will make something out of his self after school. But if he going there for FOOTBALL, god bless him, I hope he is fast, because he will need to be. Rutger is up and coming and with Ray leaving it leaves all the doors open. His dad made that decision for him.

Watson fourth best in the US. Not fourth best in NC.

July 26, 2008  02:21 PM ET

as far as Duke is concerned. Yeah i know this might be the best player they have had in years.

July 26, 2008  02:42 PM ET

Since when is anything that Duke football does considered news? How about you win more than a couple games...

July 26, 2008  03:14 PM ET

Watson fourth best in the US. Not fourth best in NC.

Crean n' Crimson

here's the quote:

"Scott, who's rated the fourth-best prospect overall in the Class of 2009 in North Carolina by rivals.com, previously had committed to Rutgers." He is from NC.

What are you talking about?

to clear up the confusion 4 u morons: #4 all purpose back in country, but there are like 10 or 11 regular running backs ahead of him on the rivals250. ALSO #4 recruit in the state of north carolina in all positions.

good luck w/ no offensive line. Duke is 3 years away from even being mediocre at best in the ACC, and the ACC isn't even that good

4th best in North Carolina. That isn't saying too much. They have terrible high school football in North Carolina and Virginia for that matter

July 26, 2008  11:47 PM ET

anyone know why a message sent to themoderator@fannation.com is undeliverable?

July 26, 2008  11:58 PM ET

And the award for stupid comment of the week goes to:

"I thought they were into date rape and field hockey of another sort!"

July 27, 2008  08:52 PM ET

He must have really wanted to stay home to go to Duke. Cutcliffe is a good coach but if he brings Duke to a bowl game then he wins Coach Of The Year.
