Steinbrenners OK Washburn trade

The Yankees aren't done adding pieces they hope can carry them past the Red Sox and Rays and into October. According to several sources, the Steinbrenner family has given GM Brian Cashman the financial green light to acquire lefty Jarrod Washburn from the Mariners, a move that is expected to be completed shortly. While the Yankees won't part with high-level prospects, if the Mariners want something better than what the Yankees are willing to give, the Mariners are going to have to take Kei Igawa.

Washburn isnt really a need right now. Our pitching is fantastic, and if Ponson chokes we can fix it internally. heard Kennedy's pitching great why not try him out again. I know we need the lefty, but do you really think Washburns the answer?

July 27, 2008  07:48 AM ET

I wouldn't say he is a 'need' - but if the price is right-
meaning NO BIG prospects back to them
why not pick him up?

every team could use a lefty that will give you innings-
(and I think he's signed through next year)

If its just for Igawa, fine. But what if he busts? If im correct he makes about 10 mil next year. Well, it is the Yanks I guess, and with all the money coming off the books next year.....

July 27, 2008  08:39 AM ET

I would not give much for the guy. A career .500 pitcher with a high 4+ ERA. They see something I don't, but I honestly cannot remember the guy ever pitching much..

July 27, 2008  09:00 AM ET

I like how they say, well giv eyou this, this & this oh and you have to take Igawa...

I basically agree with the majority here. Cash, just say no.

yoyo 20 bucks says igawa goes to seattle and wins 15 games nxt yr

July 27, 2008  10:21 AM ET

This is still the same no-brainer it was the first time they ran this story. It's sixth incarnation doesn't make the acquisition any more or less intelligent. I wish they would pull the trigger already and move this trade from story to reality so there can be more room on the threads for Manny stories ...

This is a bad deal for the Yanks because they will be stuck with Washburn next year at $10 mill, They'd be better off bringing Moose back for that.

You better hope they bring back Moose! But Moose & Company isn't enough. If it were, they wouldn't be thinking about Washburn.

July 27, 2008  11:17 AM ET

They are better off letting Hughes and or Kennedy suck as the #5 starter than giving starts to Washburn next year. Washburn is fine this year with Wang hurt, I just don't want to be stuck with his 5.00 ERA all season next year.

July 27, 2008  11:34 AM ET

think the starting rotation is fine right now. why mess with something that isn't broke..washburn has had a terrible year why bring another over paid pitchers that sucks

July 27, 2008  12:05 PM ET

If the Yankees think Washburn will help, they should make the trade. They can always unload him in the off-season, and the Yankees won't blink at paying part of that 10 million to have him suck for someone else.

yankess need to stop going after former pitchers that beat us in the playoffs hey remember how the angels whack us out in 2002 washburn hey we all remember a former pitcher that beat us in the world series in 2001 yes Mr Big Useless now that hes back in Arizona Hes pitching again like the Big Unit .Yankees stay away from Washburn .

July 27, 2008  02:29 PM ET

Igawa couldn't win 15 games on Seattle's single A team.

July 27, 2008  04:12 PM ET

OK so it's washburn to replace igawa, I think Igawa gets what $ 8 mil a year? Washburn $10 a year? This don't seem right. But I agree they need to get rid of Igawa, He has proved over and over again he can't pitch in the majors, maybe on the west coast and with other japanese players, who are very popular with the Mariners, he can get a second wind.

Check out Washburn's line today against the Jays..8ip 4h 1er 2bb 2K.....not bad, better then anything Igawa did

July 27, 2008  04:43 PM ET

...I might be able to go 8 and give up 1 against the Jays, too. I'm not in danger of cracking the Yanks' starting five though.
