Samardzija to stick with Cubs

After popping eyes with his poise and radar-gun readings in his major league debut Friday, Jeff Samardzija may never see the minors again. "If you see a young man throwing the ball like that, I don't think he'll be the guy leaving, I'll tell you that," manager Lou Piniella said Saturday. "If he continues to throw the ball [well], it's almost like trading for a reliever." One reliever will have to be trimmed when closer Kerry Wood returns, probably late this week. "We'll see how it unfolds and evaluate it," said GM Jim Hendry, who gave Samardzija $10 million over five years in 2006. Does Hendry mind that Samardzija is in the bullpen and not starting? "It doesn't matter," he said.

Throws 95 MPH fastballs which don't come within 2 feet of the strike zone. HMMM...Mitch Williams.

July 27, 2008  11:26 AM ET

Big deal.
Since he played for Notre Dame and is now with the Cubs I have two reasons not to like him.
Can't wait for the Cubs to finish in 3rd place after their idiot fans have talked crap since may.

first game in the majors maybe alittle nerves, i think once he gets a chance to pitch a few more time up in the majors he will be fine.. just give him a chance before bashing him

July 27, 2008  12:05 PM ET

He was throwing some heat. I was amazed. I'll cheer for him, but I'm not cheering for the Cubbies.

July 27, 2008  01:11 PM ET

Trade Howry and keep jeff, howry keeps blowing late leads.

July 27, 2008  01:26 PM ET

Right now the Cubs can't really trust Howry or Marmol, they really need Jeff at this point.

The bullpen has been solid but theres no question that Samardzija will help. Debut jitters, but let him pitch

July 27, 2008  03:17 PM ET

Samardzika will be very good however the cubs shouldnt rush him..Marmol is more than effective and howry is serviceable although he hasnt pitched well of late he is an effective reliever

July 27, 2008  05:42 PM ET

He has great movement on his 98 MPH FB whats not too like. As A ND fan I wish he would have chosen FB though, man was he the man at WR.

July 27, 2008  06:09 PM ET

He pitched 2 innings today and got his 1st save. Has a pretty good split finger fastball and was throwing in the 90's again today.

July 27, 2008  06:13 PM ET

Expect to see a lot of this guy for the rest of the season.

July 27, 2008  06:26 PM ET

Hey Philtrash.........3rd place is reserved for the Cardinals. Get your **** right!!

July 27, 2008  08:39 PM ET

Does anybody know how to pronounce that name - I got a Masters Degrees from "Hooked On Phonic " but I'm strugglig - please help !!!

July 27, 2008  08:52 PM ET

Hey Phil you Ahole, The 3rd spot will be the little red birds, CUBS ALL THE WAY !!!!!

July 27, 2008  09:13 PM ET

Jeff is the man i played against him in high school and he is better than i would have ever thought he would have been he is never going back to the minors if he keeps pitching like that i think however we need to move Scott Erye he is an overpaid baby who is either hurt or blowing 3 run leads and we already have to lefty relieve men who get the job done and bob howery will get it back together and yes the red birds will finish a distant 3rd

July 27, 2008  10:15 PM ET

I hated him at Notre Dame, but if he continues to pitch this well, I could certainly learn to like him as a Cub.

It's kind of funny to see people bashing the Cubs. For so long, nobody gave a crap what the Cubs were doing. Now they illicit the kind of hatred that's usually reserved for the Yankees and Red Sox. My Cubbies have almost arrived.
