Liverpool sets sights on Silva

Liverpool is today preparing to forget about signing Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry and instead move for Valencia winger David Silva. Reds boss Rafa Benitez has been chasing Barry for months now but he has been priced out of a move for him by Villa boss Martin O'Neill.

OH MY GOD THANK YOU FINALLY RAFA

I've been wanting them to pursue this kid for 2 years now, and instead we sign turds like Benayoun and Pennant. T&R has finally made me happy!

A bit of background on this: Valencia has arguably the most talented group of young players in the world (Silva, Albiol, Villa, Sunny, Maduro, Alexis, etc), but they are in pretty bad shape financially and have been getting pressure from their board to sell off some of these whiz kids. Allegedly Sevilla offered around $35m for Villa, which the manager rejected, which in turn made the board angry.

Now Liverpool is looking hard at him, which is something they should have been doing a LONG time ago. The rumor is around $40m, which would be a flat out steal for a player of this talent. I am not kidding or exaggerating in the least when I say I think he can be the next Zidane...I can see him coming in and being one of the best wingers in the Prem immediately, and then eventually moving to the center as Gerrard's replacement down the line.

This is a player that they could relly use, yethe has stated he doesn't want leave valencia

interesting

Can rafa push him in?

He's probably better than barry, they are different types of players though

Ahhh, the prem is turning more non-english by the day

Not to sound "mean" but if Barcelona can't afford Silva I very much doubt Liverpool can either. Barcelona have been rumored to have made a 20mil offer for Silva that has already been turned down. Also Silva's made it pretty clear that his preference is to remain in La Liga.

I'm not saying he wouldn't be a good fit for Liverpool I just don't see how they can outbid Barcelona for him unless Barcelona set their sights on Arshavin instead. One thing is clear, there is no way Silva's worth more than 20mil! In today's market left wingers receiving 20+mil is a rare exception rather than the rule.

As for "Cowace 2" comments I would have to respectfully disagree. Silva looked great at the Euro's, but even so he wasted a ton of good chances on goal and consider the talent he had surrounding him. I would also look "good" if I was surounded by the likes of Villa, Torres and Fabregas.

To even utter Zidane's name is the same sentence is blasphemous! There was and will always be only ONE Zidane! Silva is no Zidane trust me. And 40mil for Silva is complete insanity! I will bet my house that no team is going to pay such a ridiculous amount for him. Not even 30mil, and Valencia should consider themselves blessed if they even get close to 25mil for him.

Also consider that Silva's much more of a facilitator than a scorer. 9/10 times he will look to cross into-the-box instead of taking his own shot, which most times is woefully off target. If you watched him closely in La Liga you will see and notice that the man cannot score to save his life! I think he scored something like 3 goals last season in La Liga! 3 goals, considering you had Villa on your team as well! That just shouldn't happen! Look, I'll admit Silva's good, maybe even go so far as to say "slightly very good" but that's a far stretch from comparing him to one of the all-time greats in football.

First, about Silva at Euro, I think it says a lot about his talent that he managed not only to make the starting XI what must be the deepest team in Europe (and the best midfield in the world) at age 22, but to stand out as being arguably their most dangerous attacker is something pretty amazing. Don't knock down Silva just because the team was good...he was an extremely important part of everything they accomplished.

Also, bear in mind that Silva is only 22. When Zidane was 22, he was playing the role of a gifted young attacking mid at Bordeaux...he didn't really make a splash in Europe until quite a bit later. Silva still has a LONG career ahead of him, and if I had to pick a young player with the best chance to equal Zidane's career accomplishments right now, Silva would be my pick (even over Messi).

Finally, he's much, much more than just a left winger. He is comfortable on either wing and in the center as well, and he's also far more than just an up-and-down winger, which it seems is how you've pegged him. I fully expect that eventually he will move to the central attacking role, and by the time he does I fully expect him to be regarded as one of the best footballers on the planet. He's an astonishing talent; I've not seen the same combination of pace, ball skills, shooting skills, and brilliant short and long range passing EVER in a player his age. He's a better passer than Messi or Ronaldo, he's faster and better on the ball than Gerrard or Lampard, he's more creative and selfless than Kaka...in my mind, he has the skill set to surpass all of those players as he continues to mature.

He's well worth $40m, especially considering some of the transfers that have gone down (or not gone down) recently (Tevez? Barry? etc). I REALLY hope Rafa makes this happen, as I think Silva might be the single best signing we could make at Anfield for next season.

And of course..."if Barcelona can't afford Silva I very much doubt Liverpool can either". Right. Are we a bit arrogant here?

First you compare Silva to Zidane, now you compare him to Messi - two years YOUNGER than him AND a better player than him. There is no way to explain your logic my friend.

My point being that there's is only one Zidane. Sure, "a" player may come along in our lifetime who may be better, who's to say? but Zidane, like Maradona and Pele were "unique" in their own way. Just like Messi, no matter how brilliant he may turn out to be will never be another Maradona. Messi will be the next Messi, period!

I think we should leave it at that we can respecfully agree to disagree. All I can say is that if Silva is the "gem" of a player you claim he "could" be then he wouldn't still be dangling in the wind at Valencia. Someone I'm sure would have stepped up and paid the ridiculous 40mil amount you claim he is worth by now.

I wasn't trying to be arrogant or hint of jealousy as far as Liverpool's interest in the lad. I'm sure most will agree that if it ever came down to a bidding war between the clubs, Liverpool's chances would seem rather bleak. If you add the fact that Silva would prefer to continue to ply his trade in La Liga, a move to ANY European club would seem unlikely at this time.

Benitez, please stop taking away players from la Liga

July 28, 2008  09:23 AM ET

We're in the midst of dropping 18 mil on Keano, where are we getting all this cash from?

July 28, 2008  02:09 PM ET

I think the best option for Liverpool is to sell Durk Kuyt and Andrei Voronin , and then go after Silva. I am sure the Americans must be desperate for some sort of success after seeing how well the Glazers have done with United, and this is probably it for Liverpool and Rafa . Bottom line is if they do not win the Premier league this season , there will be an exodus from Anfield, starting with Gerard. This has to be their year!!!

Well they signed Keane, no way they can afford him now
