Favre denies Vikings tampered

Brett Favre flatly denied the Minnesota Vikings had tampered with him as he considered whether to return to play earlier this month. He said he talked to Vikings coach Brad Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, but he said he talks to both men and text-messages them often, as well as to other NFL coaches in and out of season. Bevell coached the Green Bay quarterbacks from 2003-05, while Childress spent a lot of time in Green Bay studying the Packers offense as a University of Wisconsin assistant in the mid-1990s. But that may not be enough to prevent the league from finding the Vikings guilty of tampering. Favre was interviewed this week by the league's vice president of security, Milt Ahlerich, about the Packers' belief that the Vikings tampered.

At this point, do we really care?

July 27, 2008  08:24 AM ET

This will not affect the Vikings play this year: So who cares?

Oh yeah, Baby!

IN YOUR FACE TED THOMPSON

So, if even Farve said there was no tampering how the hell could the Vikings STILL get charged with tampering.

Maybe Ted Thompson should give one of his coveted draft picks (obviously he'll never spend money on free agents) to the Vikings for bringing them into this whole mess.

"So, if even Farve said there was no tampering how the hell could the Vikings STILL get charged with tampering. "

So, anytime someone who is accused of something all they have to do is say they did not do it?
Sorry, but it appears the Vikings will lose something in all of this. The league is taking it seriously. The question is what? It could be a very low draft pic or a fine. Not the kind of thing that amounts to much. The Packers are not going to let him go to a team in their division. It would take a LOT in return for them to do that.

July 27, 2008  10:14 AM ET

like he is gonna rat out the team he really wants to go to.

July 27, 2008  11:07 AM ET

still love the image. T&R needs to do a vikes story daily so they can post that image everyday.

"but he said he talks to both men and text-messages them often, as well as to other NFL coaches in and out of season. "

Would be extrememly unfair of the NFL to go after JUST the Vikings after this statement by Favre.

July 27, 2008  11:26 AM ET

The last time I saw something like that was in a zombie movie.

July 27, 2008  11:42 AM ET

The timeline for those conversations with Childress and Bevell would have important implications for the tampering charge. If Favre spoke to the two more often in the weeks preceding this circus, it would seem more likely that tampering did occur.

July 27, 2008  11:54 AM ET

The "tampering" bit is a non-story. The caravan has moved on.

July 27, 2008  12:29 PM ET

At least they brought back the great photo of Childress and his bad neck!!

July 27, 2008  01:13 PM ET

Please... The niners did little more than this and they got draft picks taken. There is NO reason that childress should be speaking to Favre during this time. If Favre called, Childress needed to decline to speak to him so it wouldnt be seen as improper. BIG mistakes. The vikings should lose out on some draft picks!

July 27, 2008  01:18 PM ET

vikings won't win until they hire a decent coach.

July 27, 2008  01:51 PM ET

So, BF is starting to make noises about maybe unretiring even though he knows that the packers have "moved on," but he's still under contract with the Packers, and what do Childress and Bevell do??? Let's chat with Brett! Surely no one would suspect anything improper once brett demands to be released from GB "unconditionally." And Brett has apparently told friends of his that the vikings are his team of choice. It's just a coincidence! (And if you believe that I'd like to open up a used car lot in your town.)

If bf an bc deny any tampering took place then it must be true, they have no motive to fabricate, right?

Did A** KIsser Peter King even thing to ask the legend whether the frequency of the calls and texts w/ Bevell and Childress increased before the **** hit the fan in GB? Did he think to ask ol' Brett what he and Childress were talking about, if not about the possibility of BF playing for the Vikings? Wow, hard hitting reporting . . . I can see why he makes the big bucks.

July 27, 2008  02:11 PM ET

Does anyone really think that Favre would say "yes the Vikings tampered with me?" What kind of bonehead would do that? Maybe the same bonehead who gets called on it.

July 27, 2008  02:16 PM ET

Just think-- the NFL and everyone would have moved on just fine and Pack fans would have embraced Aaron Rodgers, realizing that the Pack would have to move on had Favre just stayed retired. But Favre couldn't let that happen. He trashes TT on Fox News, now certainly will turn Pack fans against the management and Aaron Rodgers, and now QB's from three other teams have to keep the thought in the back of their heads that they may not have the starting job tomorrow (Bucs, Jets, Vikes). Really how many lives does he have to throw into total chaos before settling on a decision? To the Favremaniacs -- the day will come where you will no longer have Favre to keep your junk habit going. Better to get your counseling now.

July 27, 2008  02:25 PM ET

Tired of the Packgirls and Farva. I'm a lifelong Vikes fan and I've never been excited about the prospect of BF wearing the purple & gold. I've never much cared for Childress either. I'm sure many NFL players & coaches speak constantly throughout the entire year. In todays era coaches and players constantly move around the league from team to team and many have played/coached with each other. Childress really needs to put all his support behind T-Jackson and make that clear to the media. Give T-Jackson a chance, realistically the Vikes probably are not Superbowl bound this year, maybe next, their attitude is too immature & selfish (check Giants when self-absorbed Shockey was sidelined they started winning). Adrian P. would do the team better if in every interview he stops talking about only himself and starts talking team, he's not going to win the Superbowl by himself. Great to read about Chad Greenway and Zygi helping with post-flood cleanup in Iowa! Get the right attitude Vikes, then you'll have that Vikings Pride!

July 27, 2008  03:15 PM ET

The Vikings need to do the same as the Packers and say that Tavaris Jackson is the starting QB and they too want Brett Favre to stay retired!

Green Bay already fears and respects the Minnesota Vikings already. Why else would they be trying to get them in trouble with the league?

July 27, 2008  05:59 PM ET

In a related story, Brad Childress denied his similarity to Ned Flanders. Hiddly-ho!

This is the first comment or action that I have ever liked coming from Favery. Let move on.
