Burnett destined for Cardinals?

We wait for action on the Blue Jays' A.J. Burnett, or even (gasp) Roy Halladay, who according to a Newark Star-Ledger report is available because he's frustrated in Toronto. The Cardinals, despite the fact they will soon get back Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright, have the best shot because Burnett wants to go to St. Louis and he has a no-trade clause to 15 teams. The Blue Jays and Cardinals have also done business before, with the Troy Glaus-Scott Rolen swap.

Burnett's dog of a contract will prevent the Cardinals dealing for him. Halliday would be another matter; but, I think it's fantasy to believe he's available.

July 27, 2008  09:23 AM ET

hallady is available? i doubt it

July 27, 2008  09:30 AM ET

There was a thread on T&R claiming he's available. Yes, I think it was pure fantasy.

July 27, 2008  10:17 AM ET

umm hey omar did hear Roy Hallady is avalible i mean hes not hispanic but y not as obama would say make a "change"

July 27, 2008  10:46 AM ET

Why would Mo trade for Burnett when AJ can opt out? I don't see it making any sense for the Birds. Unless they were completely certain that AJ would stay....but there is no way to be 100% sure of that.

Yes, I think the Halladay thing is a pipe-dream, but it was nice to imagine it the other day.

July 27, 2008  11:39 AM ET

As a Jays fan i dont wanna even think about halladay being availible, but burnett is different. Just yesterday he made comments that he is still considering the 2 year extension and he likes to be a Jay. I dont believe it but whatever. However with the Jays winning 5 in a row and being only 8.5 back of the division and 7.5 back in the wild card are they still sellers? Also Litsch is in AAA and McGowan is done for the season, so who would the 5 pitcher in the rotation be?

July 27, 2008  11:42 AM ET

non story.. the Jays aren't going to get rid of the only think good about their team.

July 27, 2008  06:24 PM ET

Anyone want this guy? Anyone? Anyone?

July 27, 2008  07:36 PM ET

I don't think I could ever forgive a trade involving Halladay.

July 27, 2008  08:35 PM ET

Burnett will end up with the Diamondbacks - this is my prediction from my sources !!! Drew ( the SS) will be coming to Toronto !!!

July 27, 2008  08:59 PM ET

GoSabres: It would be a death blow to the organization, and it would take a long time for them to recover.

Hub Man: I could see that, the Jays have wanted a SS and a lead off guy for years, Drew fits that.

July 27, 2008  10:08 PM ET

If the story was from Toronto, I'd believe it...from Newark, nope!!

July 27, 2008  10:31 PM ET

halladay would bring in MAJOR prospects. i would trade joba and huges for him.

Why would the Jays want Drew when they have McDonald and Eckstein on the roster?

You just answered your own question !!!

haha... that was a good one....

Yeah the thing is if Burnett wants to come to St. Louis, and we were his second choice back when he signed with the Jays, and he wants to work with Duncan.... I'm pretty sure he wouldn't opt out... seems like a waste of time to do all that and leave.

Thats beside the point though cuz he's not coming UNLESS this situation occurs:

Rockies chose not to trade Brian Fuentes, then the dominoes fall because the Cardinals still are desperate for a Cl so you trade for Burnett adding rotation depth making it ok for Wainwright to become the closer. I still say Duncan, Mather, and Anderson for A.J. Burnett is a solid deal... and the guys on the radio liked it too so im not craAaAaAzy.

July 28, 2008  12:42 PM ET

The only way we make the Duncan, Mather, and Anderson deal is if we can get an extension out of Burnette. Otherwise it's three good young players for a 2 month rental.

July 28, 2008  01:12 PM ET

Trading Duncan and Mather would not be a big deal. Its Bryan Anderson, this kid has star written all over him. He has no place with us in the big leagues with Yadi blocking the way, so I agree he is great trade bait. But if we do trade him, it needs to be for a guy who could help the cardinals in years to come. Right now, the cardinals farm system of pitchers is looking great, with Garcia and Mortensen, only 22 years old, looking excellent, and guys like Ottavino soon to follow. I don't think that trading Anderson for Burnett would be the best idea.

I'd maybe move Anderson for Burnett.....but only with a guarantee that he doesn't opt out...... I don't see this deal getting done.
