Big East courting Army and Navy

It has taken five years for the aftershocks of the ACC's raid on the Big East to subside. Now the league that commissioner Mike Tranghese rebuilt seems rock solid. So what's next for the league? Expansion. The Post has learned that the Big East has explored deals with Army and Navy in football. The concept is for each of the service academies to play four Big East opponents each season on a rotating basis. A ninth member, even limited partners such as Army and Navy (both have a significant TV following) would give league members eight league games. That would allow the flexibility of four non-conference games so teams could pursue non-conference rivals such as Pittsburgh and Penn State. Army and Navy initially rejected the idea of a Big East association but because both are independents, that could change.

Now that Paul Johnson is at GT, we'll see if Navy was really good or if it was his coaching. I'd like to see them (Army & Navy) do well, they were teams you didn't want to play in the early 1900's.

Being that the Pope runs Notre Damn, perhaps the Government should get involved in running the affairs of the military academies sport(s) programs. lol

July 28, 2008  08:41 AM ET

I like that Idea. Or maybe those two should just go ahead and join the Big East outright

July 28, 2008  09:13 AM ET

This would make necessary what needs to be done, and that would be breaking apart the football schools from the basketball only schools.

July 28, 2008  09:16 AM ET

Didsn't Army just get OUT of a conference affiliation (C-USA)?

July 28, 2008  09:32 AM ET

Yes Spaceman they did... but the Big East is a BCS conference. Would be a smart PR move on Army/Navy behalf. They would get more airtime playing BCS foes (to go with all that airtime they get for playing ND). Always a good PR story to see the academies playing on TV.

It would also put them one step above Air Force, who as a member of the MWC, are not in a BCS league.

I agree with Sexton, in that we'll see if Navy can continue its recent good form now that Coach Johnson is at Georgia Tech.

Good move for Big East opponents, not so good move for service academies. Now all other Big East teams can inflate their records by stomping the two lesser opponents to hopefully contend better in the BCS rankings.

July 28, 2008  10:38 AM ET

Navy has a cool pic too.

July 28, 2008  10:40 AM ET

But I think in the long run this is a great move by the big east, the main thing that turns me of from the big east is the lack of natural rivalries outside of Pitt-WVU, and how else do you battle that then adding the most historical rivalry in football to the confrence. Great move!

" non-conference rivals such as Pittsburgh"
Pitt is in the Big East if I'm not mistaken

Smart move for the Big East...hope it plays out. Adding that type of rivalry, army vs. navy, to your conference can only help.

Yes, but Penn State is not. They are intrastate rivals in different conferences, hence the use of "non-conference rivals."

I think this proposal is half-baked! From what can be determined, the purpose of it is to give each current Big East school four home and four away conference games, thereby making it easier for them to better negotiate a year-in- year-out, long term home and home series with other rivals. Their game against Army or Navy would count in conference standings for them, but not for Army or Navy. (The reason Penn State and PItt no longer play is Joe Paterno. He won't allow it.) Alumni from both schools have railed against this for years. In addition, the Army/Navy game would not be a Big East Conference game. Would the service academies share conference revenue? Would this strengthen the Big East's completive balance?

July 28, 2008  01:33 PM ET

wow..that would make that a powerhouse of a conference.

July 28, 2008  02:18 PM ET

No way

July 28, 2008  02:20 PM ET

Wow

July 28, 2008  02:40 PM ET

Well Navy is already contracted to be in the congressional bowl every year vs an acc team, so I don't see why they would join the Big East. I don't think television exposure would help them get many more recruits either. Big East should just go after some C-USA team or MAC

I actually like this idea but I could see Army agreeing to this before Navy. Army actually joined a conference once before (Conference USA).
