Pudge prepared for possible exit

Pudge Rodriguez will be a free agent at the end of this season. He could also be traded next month if the Tigers fall out of the American League Central race. When he was asked Sunday about his approach to free agency -- and whether he would consider waiving his limited no-trade clause -- his response was the same. "I'm ready for anything," Rodriguez said. With each passing day, it seems more likely that Rodriguez will test the open market this winter. Rodriguez, who is earning $13 million this year, said the team has yet to approach him regarding a contract extension for next season. Rodriguez acknowledged on Sunday that free agency has been on his mind. "Of course, I have to think about it," he said. Rodriguez has said that he would like to spend the rest of his career in Detroit. He did not make any similar statements Sunday.

This would be bittersweet. The Tigers need to get younger and replenish their farm system, but its always hard to trade a player like Pudge. I wouldn't be surprised to see an outfielder go as well.

You'll probably see Sheff and Jones gone as well. The problem with Pudge, is that they don't have any minor league catchers that will be ready for the Majors next season unless James Skelton can develop quickly. Alex Avila is doing well in West Michigan, but is a '08 draft pick and will need some more seasoning. Best bet is to keep Inge behind the plate, but there goes your best defensive infeilder if they do that.

Pudge is coming around better at the plate lately, However, the real assets he brings are the behind the plate work. His pick-off numbers are down but his knowledge of the game and how he leads the team on the field is the real gain. Does he warrant the 13million per he is getting? Probably not.

Bigger fish to fry is Jones and Sheff. In addition the bullpen needs to be shored up. Renteria is playing well as of late but has been a disappointment most of the season. I believe he is under a 1 yr contract so no need to worry there.

didn't know that the tigers wheren't already out of the AL cent. race..

July 28, 2008  09:54 AM ET

Would anyone want Jones or Sheff? Sheff comes off the books this year either way. Is it time to get rid of a contract like Mags? (This is all of course only if the Tigers decide they are sellers...)

July 28, 2008  10:07 AM ET

What can they get for Pudge? FA seems more likely.

July 28, 2008  10:15 AM ET

they said a few weeks ago--pudge was not on the market!,SO SIGN HIM ALREADY!!-i may be getting old(baseball terms) but he is still the best they have, and there isn't too many in the league either. i say sign him for 4 more years(he'll be 40) hell maybe with 9 years in detroit-he'll go in the hall of fame as a tiger too.

July 28, 2008  10:16 AM ET

opps--he may be getting old--dam typo errors!!

July 28, 2008  10:17 AM ET

The outlook is not really clear on this. I don;t think Detroit is out of the race yet but the extra picks would probably be better than what we get for Pudge at the moment. Detroit might have to make some hard decisions but the hardest part is realizing, even if they wanted to or not, they won't be able to get much, if anything for some of the older players we have now. After this season Pudge, Jones, Renteria, and Rogers are off the books. Sheff would still have one year to go so unloading him would be nice too but who would take him? If we let that kinda aged payroll go we could still be a winning season club but be building a better farm for a better run in the near future. Porcello could be ready as well as Willis next season. If by some act of God Willis got back to form, we could trade Nate for other things to fit the bill. Everyone wants to write off detroit, but then- that's when we supride the most...
