Why Favre could remain retired

As the days have continued to click by in the never-ending Brett Favre un-retirement saga, I've been getting the increasingly stronger hunch that the eventual outcome is going to be that Favre plays for no one in 2008. As in, stays retired. As in, never mind. I don't think he's going to be able to talk himself into taking the plunge in either New York or Tampa Bay. Reading between the lines, I think two things are pretty clear by now: First, Favre completely underestimated the blowback to his belated attempt to walk into the Packers' 2008 plans at virtually the last minute, without the benefit of attending even one offseason workout. He had no idea that anyone would challenge his right to re-claim the throne in Green Bay, and he's shocked and hurt by the reaction to his attempted restoration. Which leads into my second observation about Favre's messy situation: He got here because he seems incapable of thinking anything out longer than 15 minutes into the future.

Dear T&R,
FOUR Favre stories (and counting) today?
Are you effing serious? There was no way to compress them into one story?
And this one is just a random ramble. Come on.

Brett, I hope you continue to blow up the Packers locker room and I do hope you come back. No matter what I think of your Packers, you are a great player. Don't stop playing until you know for sure you can't go anymore.

"He got here because he seems incapable of thinking anything out longer than 15 minutes into the future." Or other than about himself.

On the other hand, this is a Don Banks story.

Why Favre could remain retired?

Because he is an over-the-hill, washed up QB?

"Reading between the lines, I think two things are pretty clear by now:"

Whoops, there it is! Credibility: zero.

Or you could just be speculating again. I bet he does play.

July 28, 2008  12:24 PM ET

It could be because someone else has to want to pay $13 million for a QB and give up something in return ( draft pics). Just a hunch.

It's Up to Farve. If he really wanted to Play he should have reported to training camp. If he was better than Rogers he would become the starter no matter what the head coach said at a conference. This game is about winning. I think Farve is having second thoughts about going back to play. I think it's the thought of having to come back to training camp and go through all the running, the heat, workouts and the thought of losing his legacy statis with the Green Bay Packers Fans if he plays for another team. If he wanted to play he would go to camp and compete. If he does not within in this week he will stay retired.

Word has it that he will report on Wednesday. What a mess.
