Pirates turn down Braves' deal

Before the start of Friday's game, many of the Braves players were asking about Jason Bay. Some were under the impression that they were going to walk into the clubhouse that day and find him to be their newest teammate. But a proposed deal, which would have brought Bay to Atlanta in exchange for four Minor Leaguers, was killed when presented to the Pirates owners for approval. Still as the week progresses, the Braves will continue to pursue Bay, who is set to earn $7.5 million during the final year of his contract next year. The Pirates would have a definite interest in shortstop Brent Lillibridge, who they developed before trading him to the Braves in exchange for Adam LaRoche last year. In addition, they'd likely ask for Brandon Jones, who would be considered a Major League-ready outfielder.

Weren't they offering anymore AAA pitchers?

July 28, 2008  02:26 PM ET

Come on Braves we have to complete this trade, we need this bat, now more if we are going to trade Mark Texeira, that I dont't think so either. Lets go braves

July 28, 2008  02:40 PM ET

Come on, dont give up yet. We can do it.

4 minor leaguers?? They failed to mention it was a bat boy, ball girl, fly ball shagger and 39 y/o pitcher. Oh wait, the Pirates make okay trades now.

Apparently the Braves didn't learn anything when they made the ridiculous trade for Teixeira. Now they want to rid the farm system of more of its top prospects for another dubious rental.

If they trade top prospects for Bay, I will take great pleasure of rooting against them with the same furvor I have rooted for them the last 50 plus years.

Can Wren, et als really be that dumb?

If they offered Lillibridge and Jones, then I see no reason why the Bucs would take this trade (and I have a hard time seeing why Nutting would even see this unless Huntington/Coonley promised they'd take it to the boss - but they recommended NO).
I'm not saying Lillibridge and Jones are not good. Both are clearly young players with promise. But from a Pirate perspective:
- At shortstop, Bixler had better AA and AAA numbers. Bix does not project to be a star, but neither does Lillibridge (either couldcertainly fool me there). Both are roughly the same age. No need to add there.
- In the OF, Pirates have Pearce, McCutchen, Tabata, McClouth. More depth is needed there, but Jones is not at the Bay level.
So in short, I find this MLB.com blog post to be "shaky" in credibility. By the way - the Pirates no longer have "owners" - they have "owner" singular.

I'm glad Pittsburgh turned this trade down. I just don't see the benefit of getting rid of 4 minor leaguers (2 of which are splitting time in the bigs) for Bay.

The Pirates are desparate but - NOT STUPID !!!

Sometimes the best trade is the one you do not make.

This rumor has been completely de-bunked by multiple sources. Zero credibility.
