Cardinals shopping pitcher

A little birdie says the St. Louis Cardinals are shopping ex-Twins pitcher Kyle Lohse for prospects before Thursday's trade deadline, mostly because they're not sure they'll be in the playoff hunt and because they figure the 29-year-old right-hander won't be affordable with high-demand agent Scott Boras. Lohse is 12-3 with a 3.68 earned-run average.

Giving up on him already? I doubt it.

July 29, 2008  06:55 AM ET

They are not ready to wave the white flag just yet. And besides, they will get at least a type B pick if not an A with the way he is pitching anyway.

July 29, 2008  07:01 AM ET

I think they can sign him because he wants to keep working for Duncan.

July 29, 2008  07:22 AM ET

Also, we're shopping Lohse while trying to get Burnette? That's a bit of a contradiction T&R.

I might believe this if Carpenter tanks on Wednesday. I think the Cards go for the playoffs if Carpenter pitches well.

I think its called shipping him out while he has value - if you look at his past, he's not as good as his numbers look right now...

July 29, 2008  08:37 AM ET

So the Cards are planning to fold?

July 29, 2008  09:25 AM ET

I don't think this can be true. If it is, then Mozeliak is simply surrending the season. Maybe they are inquiring just to see what the market is, but I don't think they are going to just quit on the season.

July 29, 2008  10:06 AM ET

this is absolutely not true. last night on the telecast, GM Mozalek said they are not even thinking about this. He is a Cardinal through this year if not longer. This shows how stupid the press is and they don't kno what they are talking about.

July 29, 2008  10:43 AM ET

Dagwood - he's never worked with Dave Duncan before.

You're right, CF27......Mo was pretty insistent that Lohse was not going to be moved.

July 29, 2008  11:18 AM ET

Where do they get these stories from? CardsFan2 hit it right on the head. They are shopping Lohse while trying to get Burnette? I mean seriously come on now.

This is a prime example of why this segment of SI is called truth and rumors

July 29, 2008  12:26 PM ET

It may be called Truth & Rumors. but its neither truth or a rumor. Its an idiot reporter that knows nothing that is going on. The Cards are in the playoff hunt and not going away any time soon. Lohse is not our ace either. We have 2 guys ahead of him even when they are both hurt. This is a prime example of stupidity in reporting on something that they have no clue about.

July 29, 2008  12:32 PM ET

cardsfan27: not to mention this is an even numbered year.

July 29, 2008  12:54 PM ET

Agreed that this is unlikely. However, do the Cards fans on here think that maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to consider in light of the fact that Lohse is clearly overachieving (this is the only season his ERA has been under 4) and perhaps now is the time to sell high?

Just a thought.

The trade I might like would be Lohse for Fuentes. That would fill a current team need with two excellent starters coming off the DL soon. Both have contracts expiring at the end of the season

Colorado would also be filling a current need from a strength. They aren't out of the West race since noone seems to want the division.

July 29, 2008  01:02 PM ET

Both have contracts expiring at the end of the season

By both, I mean Lohse and Fuentes.

July 29, 2008  01:17 PM ET

i have a hard time believing that the cards are ready to fold, yes the NL Central is very tough, but they are still very much in contention

July 29, 2008  01:33 PM ET

Buckner, have you thought that mayb hes just a better pitcher as a Cardinal. Look at the guys that came here and were good but not anywhere else. Carpenter was a .500 pitcher before he was Cardinal. Here's a list for you. Carpenter, Lohse, Suppan, Weaver, Wellemeyer, Bottenfield, Kile, Morris, and etc. Heck even Wainwright wasnt great in the Braves organization and now look at him. LaRussa and Duncan have that touch.

July 29, 2008  01:36 PM ET

I agree with you 27.....and I would add Woody Williams to that list......

Lohse is one of those guys that is better off in St Louis then anywhere else, and he should consider that before leaving. Look at what happened to Weaver, Morris, etc after they left STL.
