In the class of 2009, Michigan has already received a verbal commitment from Apopka, Fla., athlete Jeremy Gallon, and is in position to receive several more. Among the strongest possibilities are Pahokee, Fla., teammates Vincent Smith and Brandin Hawthorne. Both prospects are set to announce their commitments at Pahokee's Kickoff Classic game Aug. 30. Smith, a 5-foot-7, 159-pound running back prospect with explosive speed and jaw-dropping agility, also holds offers from the likes of Tennessee, Iowa State, Wisconsin and Minnesota, but has consistently listed Michigan among his favorites. Hawthorne, at 6-1, 196 pounds, played defensive end as a junior, but projects to the outside linebacker position in college. Besides Michigan, Hawthorne has offers from the likes of Tennessee, West Virginia, South Florida and Louisville. Hawthorne said Monday that his decision will come down to Michigan, West Virginia and South Florida, but he also predicted that he and Smith would be playing together in college.

Why is South Florida the only Florida team going after these guys? Maybe they're over rated.

Seems like Michigan is cornering the market on 5-9 and under slot receivers. Might have to rename the team to the Michigan Midgets! :P

Finally, a picture of RR without a WVU hat.

5-7 159 lbs. That's my size, and I can tell you I sure did look outof place when I stood near the high school football team, more less my college team.

The one great thing about small slots who are shifty, fast and jack rabbit like is that it's harder for those taller players to get leverage to tackle them let alone if they can even catch up to them. It sure will be interesting to see how good or bad they are utilized. Word is that Michael Shaw is WOWING many in the off season training.

Just part of the process....the new "system" will require some smaller, but speedier WR's....

5-7 159lbs .. this guys going to get killed in the big ten...... sound slike good pick ups for michigan.... michigan will be back to give ohio state problems.... just being realistic.... people think michigan is going to struggle.... i dont think they will.. michigan will be fine

It's not the size of the dog but the size of the fight in the dog that matters. I'm 5'7" and years ago I was told I was to "small" to be a Army Paratrooper, yeah right! I went on to serve with the elite 82nd Airborne Division. Size is not a factor in some postions in the game in my opinion. when these really quick "small" guys blows the doors of ya as he streaks by I wonder what will be said then? Michigan may struggle in the early season, but if the Defense plays up to their potential to give the Offense time to adjust they will be just fine.

thanks for your service airborne....your right on about that.

July 29, 2008  10:27 AM ET

If these kids sign then I will care. Until then it's all speculation.

5-7, 159, isn't a big deal if he's as explosive and elusive as they say he is. He'll certainly add a little weight at Michigan. Sounds to me like he's got a Warrick Dunn kind of game. Nothing wrong with that.

Michigan also has another RB who looked absolutely FREAKISH on film - Sam McGuffie. Haven't heard a lot about him since he arrived at UM, but I'm really curious to see this kid in college.

Who told you that you were too small, i was 5'7 and the girl in front of me in airborne school was 5'2 or 5'3

Eyeswide open,

Other word is that SAM MCGUFFIE is also turning head during the offseason. Granted, it's sans pads so no telling what will happen when real football is playing, but he's in great shape and eager to prove himself.

July 29, 2008  11:42 AM ET

Steve Smith in the pros has proven that you don't need great size to compete even at that level. Give the kid a chance. He could turn out to be a "game breaker."

Samie Parker, Ken-yon Rambo and Ted Ginn were all slight in build.
