Mets contact Red Sox about Manny

Contrary to the denials that made the rounds Monday, officials from both teams say the Mets have contacted the Red Sox about Manny Ramirez and are interested in pursuing a deal for him if Boston decides to make him available. The Red Sox suspect that GM Omar Minaya wants Ramirez more than Mets ownership does. Regardless, the Mets are reluctant to part with top-prospect talent in exchange for outfielders like Adam Dunn, Raul Ibanez and Randy Winn, but they (rightly) consider Ramirez a far superior hitter to those in that group, and they would discuss players in a Ramirez deal that they would not discuss in others. What remains to be seen is whether a Ramirez deal is too complicated to come together in time for the deadline.

Manny a Met? I prefer that to him going to NY's other team. But I do not seeing it happening before the deadline.

Maybe he and Pedro can have the construction guys at the new park install a mango tree in the outfield for them to sit under?

I dont think its a horrible idea, can make em better offensively with Beltran and Deldago

i'll do it if and only if we can trade some no name prospect that we don't want to keep. Or a young guy hitting .220 that has some promise. Like Nick Evans. Evans for Manny, and we pick up the salary.

July 29, 2008  07:31 AM ET

Manny isn't going anywhere.

This won't happen.

Lets just clear this up before it gets out of hand, shall we.

The Red Sox will be seeking from any team involved, a regular, every-day player who can hit somewhere in the middle of the Sox lineup. Manny's production is a rarity and they will need to replace him. That means that top prospects, while still an option, are not necessarily what they want. The Sox aren't the Pirates, and they aren't rebuilding. The money is not the issue. Its ridding themselves of a headache.

From the Mets, you can expect the Sox to want Beltran in return. I'm not convinced Fernando Martinez is what they would want. He's a 19 year old phenom in need of at least 1 more year of seasoning.

Again, its not about the money. And the Mets do not have what the Sox do. The best you could hope for would be a three-way deal where a team would provide muscle to the Sox lineup while the Mets threw in whatever prospects they have left, and then secure Manny.

July 29, 2008  08:16 AM ET

No problem.

Its a funny rumor. The Mets are only in this conversation because A. They can pay him, and B. Omar loves Manny. And only Omar can convince someone that he has the pieces to get this done. Its possible, dont get me wrong. But what we have is what the Sox don't need. Just Beltran. And we aren't trading Beltran. Seriously though, I'll take a lineup that looks like Reyes-Beltran-Wright-Delgado-Manny-Church 1 through 6 any day of the week.

Theo will eat Minaya's lunch in any deal. The two aren't even on the same plane intellectually.

July 29, 2008  08:32 AM ET

Omar would be a lunatic to give up what he would have to for a player Manny's age, with Manny's troublesome attitude. I don't care what kind of hitter he is right now, he's just not worth what Epstein would ask for.

July 29, 2008  08:33 AM ET

This is a serious question. Who would the Sox want/need from the Mets?

It's not so much what we need/want, but rather it's about what can we get in return for a commodity that will worth zero to us in November (assuming Sox don't pick up the option). It basically comes down to whether Sox believe Manny will become a bigger distraction to the team than he is now and derail them in the pennant race. If they think he won't derail the efforts and will play quietly until his November release, then I don't think they trade him unless it's an unbelievable deal.

At the end of the day '08 is Manny's last season in Boston. Now will it be half-season or full-season? We will know in the 48 hours.

That's what everyone said about Nomar in '04. The situations are eerily similar. Nomar was in a contract year, hated the new owners, and was a distraction in the clubhouse.

In Manny's case, it's the distraction factor that will determine whether he is dealt or not. There are 7 close pennant races in MLB, so some GM somewhere is going to spend like a drunken sailor to get him....at least I hope so.

DanTheMan:

I see what you are saying, and I had thought about the Nomar example too. But, like him or not, Manny has a unique ability to create the dumbest distractions, then go out and crank one. I think the Redsox would be foolish to trade him this season.
