Collins struggles with Skins scheme

Re-signing backup quarterback Todd Collins was the Redskins' main goal in free agency this offseason. Coach Jim Zorn traveled to Quincy, Mass., the day before free agents could sign to re-recruit Collins, eating lunch in the player's home town and reiterating the Redskins' interest in him. Collins -- who played a key role in the team's regular season-ending four-game winning streak -- returned to the Redskins for a three-year, $9 million contract that included a $3 million signing bonus. For the first time in his career, Collins, primarily a backup in his first 13 seasons in the NFL, had financial security, and Washington retained the quarterback it wanted to play behind developing starter Jason Campbell. Although Collins played well down the stretch when Campbell was injured last season, some Redskins observers wondered how he would fare in a new offense for the first time in nine seasons. So far in training camp, Collins is off to slow start, he said. Collins has appeared frustrated throughout camp. He has struggled to connect with receivers downfield and often seems to go through his progressions slowly as if he is unsure about the receivers' routes. Zorn has pushed Campbell publicly and privately to raise his level of play, saying he wants Campbell to continue to work on his mechanics and play faster, but he seems to have taken a gentler approach with Collins.

At the end of last season, so many people were saying Collins should be the 'skins starter this season. I guess there actually was a reason he was a back up all these years.

Zorn,

Just give Collins a hug, he'll be fine.

Todd Collins off to a slow start? Not able to learn a playbook? Has poor mechanics and can't adjust to the speed of the NFL?

Where have I heard this before?

Oh wait, that's right.... the Bills drafted him out of Michigan and he sucked booty.

good one Buffalo TF.

still glad when T&R does real football stories. would you rather have another Tmz&Rumors stories about who is doing what on the town with who..

Darn backup QB's.

July 29, 2008  12:38 PM ET

Collins will be fine a'holes as it's the 1st week, and he played well at
the end of the season. It's Campbell's job, and if he does not cut it
Collins or the QB with the Mowie Wowie Bud from Hawaii will be the
man! Don't count the Skins out yet!

July 29, 2008  01:01 PM ET

Collins won't be fine. He was fine last season handing the ball off and throwing bombs. You throw him in an offense that requires any timing or brainpower and he's finished. I mean, come on now. He is bad enough that he couldn't start over ELVIS GRBAC... another one of Michigan's sad sad quarterback crop thru the 80s and early 90s til Tom Brady broke them out of the slump.

July 29, 2008  01:35 PM ET

This T&R is bogus. The real issue facing the Skins this year is the loss of Joe Gibbs as head coach: I think it is a very big deal and that it will affect their season with respect to wins-losses and playoff hopes.

July 29, 2008  01:35 PM ET

Oh yeah, Baby!

July 29, 2008  01:41 PM ET

How many teams has Collins played for? Seems to me he would be familiar with a lot of schemes!

"At the end of last season, so many people were saying Collins should be the 'skins starter this season. I guess there actually was a reason he was a back up all these years."

Maybe you didn't catch the part where it said hes learning a new offense.

RashSkins wont even make it to 4-12. My predicament is that 4-12 AND I am being considerate.
They QB situation is a mess dont nobodY understand what Campbells is saying -- he mumbles - according to ALL wideouts. And Collins is OLD .....
They need to realize that the only options is trading for Favre. a 2nd and a 6th Rounder will do it.

July 29, 2008  03:24 PM ET

It's Campbell's job anyway!

Post some links... I need to refresh my memory on what ALL the wide outs said again.

thanks,

I is the man....you worry about your Eagle's or was it NYG's..seems
like you flip flop a bit in that aspect. Let's see Eagle's players don't
like Samual's fat deal, and Westbrook mad at his pay..Mcnabb won't
last the whole season...again....
NYG's have Plexico mess, Dumped Shocky, and were a one hit wonder
so what are you going to do next join the bandwagon Cowboy fans
since everyone says they are the team to beat....

'I is the man' must be from the cowgirls country. It's funny he comments on JC's English. He "predicaments" that the skins will go 4-12..it's predict you dumbo! JC is going to have a monster season this year and Collins will be a decent backup QB should the 'skins need him. It's the first week of training camp. The media jumps the gun the moment he over throws the receivers a few times.
