How much stock do the the Maple Leafs have in Luke Schenn? Enough to have three members of the hockey department watch the prized defenseman at this week's Team Canada world junior team evaluation camp in Ottawa. "He's the highest pick we've had at this camp in a long time and so far he has acquitted himself well," said Leafs amateur scouting director Dave Morrison, who is joined by player development director Dallas Eakins and player personnel boss Al Coates.

This kid is going to be one of the best picks from this years draft...my prediction

Agreed, they shouldn't rush him. They have enough defensemen that they don't need to throw him into the fire right away. Use the guys you have, let Schenn fine tune his game, suck for a few years, rebuild via te draft, and then when this team is finally moving somewhere call him up.

MaplePenguin: Ideally Schenn will play, one maybe 2 years in the minors. Also, I doubt they would wait until they are close to the playoffs to bring him up. A young defenseman, you don't need that fighting for a playoff spot. The Leafs will be garbage for the next couple of years. I'm thinking 2008-09, 09-10, 10-11. They will be back in the playoffs in 11-12. Using that logic, it would make sense to keep schenn in the minors this year, with a few games in the NHL at the end of the year. Then next year, have him compete for a spot on the team. If he earns it, great, if not back to the minors for a year. Then after that, the next season he'll be up for good.

Schennd him down to the minors to develop. He won't make the big team this year. He ain't no Sam Gagner!

July 29, 2008  03:11 PM ET

Of course they have three members to watch him. There's no-one else in the Leafs' system to watch.

With Schenn, Kaberle, Toskala, one of top picks in next year's draft and some supporting cast the Leafs may be finally going in the right direction. They need to get rid of the most overpaid defense in recent history of hockey, though.

YEs!!! INDEED! LEafs Keep a close eye on top pick because it is the ONLY top pick that they have. Wow! What a headline!

Newsflash, "Schenn just sneezed,"says amature scouting Director Dave Morrison. "Now if all of our guys could sneeze like Schenn, we should be cup contenders in no time." Dallas Eakins agrees!

NO.......... they are just gonna draft him and never look at him again. Of course they are going to monitor him, he has a very good chance at becoming a stud.
