Brian Cashman's game of chicken with the Mariners over Jarrod Washburn continued yesterday, with the Yankees' general manager saying the trade market is "frigid" right now with Thursday's non-waivers trade deadline approaching. "All cold. Very cool right now," he said. "Anybody who thinks they're on to something hot, I would check their source. Because they're lying to you." Washburn, who turns 34 on Aug. 13, is 5-9 with a 4.50 ERA. He has pitched very well lately. The Yankees do not want to send the Mariners a top prospect for Washburn but are offering to pick up the rest of the lefthander's contract. He is making $9.85 million this year and is owed $10.35 million in 2009.

Game of chicken? Are Cashman and the Steinbrenners loading up in a '73 El Camino and barreling towards Mariners' management in a '78 Ford LTD?

July 29, 2008  10:17 AM ET

M's can keep him.. we don't need another pitcher that is off/on never know what your going to get when they go out to the mound..

July 29, 2008  10:25 AM ET

Age 34, 4.50 era and 5-9. Maybe I can get in on some of this action with those stats!

Imagine, $10M for those pathetic numbers.

July 29, 2008  10:26 AM ET

I'd take him. With most pitchers, you never know what you're going to get. The rest are aces.

For instance, we didn't know what we were going to get out Ponson Sunday. Or Mussina and the entire bullpen last night. That's just pitching.

July 29, 2008  10:31 AM ET

He's been OUTSTANDING in his last ten games. He hasn't given up more than 4 runs in a game since May, and only three times all year.

That's about as good as it gets. Look before you laugh:

Hold tight Cash, if you get him you get him. If not, life will go on.

The Fan mentioned this morning that the talks for Washburn to the Yanks are dying a bit, and K.C. is reporting now a rumor that could have them sending Bannister to NY for someone like Melky Cabrera.

July 29, 2008  10:58 AM ET

Id rather take bannister than washburn

July 29, 2008  10:58 AM ET

could they throw in mahay as well

July 29, 2008  11:30 AM ET

for would would like Bannister then washburn, but wouldn't want to give up melky

July 29, 2008  12:06 PM ET

Bannister is younger than washburn, I think 28 vs 34. BUT washburn is a lefty, I think cashman has to stay pat with his offer for washburn, or sweeten it alittle, Bannister and washburn are both # 2 starters for their team, bannister IP for 2007: 165, for 2008 123
washburn IP for 2007: 193, for 2008: 118. keep Melky and go with washburn, and if it's a no go, try to hang on until september if and when hughs/wang/kennedy comes back. But i do like the lefty for yankee stadium..If bannister goes, then it would be damon/nagy/abreu in the outfiled. adding alittle more power, Melky is a damn good 4th outfielder, man, now i know why cashman gets the big bucks!!!

July 29, 2008  12:52 PM ET

the hell with him!!! lets go after Kyle Loshe

July 29, 2008  12:57 PM ET

no way do the yanks give up melky!!

July 29, 2008  12:59 PM ET

Seattle could very well blow this deal and get stuck with an albatross. The existing Yankees offer is fair.

July 29, 2008  01:28 PM ET

the yankee payroll went up another $8M from $209M with the 2 guys from pittsburgh. if we can't win with what we have....we don't deserve to make the post season. the cost to get richie sesson off waivers was small. i hope the cashman sticks to his guns and keeps the prospects. besides, washburn's numbers arent that great.

July 29, 2008  01:31 PM ET

Question: is it a cat and mouse when there's only one player? i agree with gets by buckner. Mariners might get stuck at the end.

July 29, 2008  01:36 PM ET

very good arm & glove but lets face it - melky is a 4th outfielder. yanks don't really have anyone better in the wings. gardner is still raw. that's why melky's still out there.

July 29, 2008  02:29 PM ET

i for one wouldnt mind shipping melky someplace. hes hitting .250 and austin jackson is waiting in the wings anyway.

July 29, 2008  04:09 PM ET

Hope Seattle plays hardball!

July 29, 2008  04:09 PM ET

With the Yanks..that is...we know they aren;t playing good hardball on the field...
