Sundin exit may not bring McCabe

Cliff Fletcher says if Mats Sundin doesn't return to the Leafs it won't mean the salary cap savings will accommodate exiled defenseman Bryan McCabe. And even with McCabe on the books, it's possible the Leafs will go into this season without being under a cap squeeze for the first time since the NHL adopted the salary system in 2005. Sundin would cost the Leafs in the $7-million-to-$8-million range for this season, about all the club has remaining under the current $56.7-million cap. McCabe, meanwhile, is slated to make $6.15 million this season, which Fletcher has judged too cumbersome to carry, either this year or factored into a buyout of the remaining two seasons, both at $4.15 million, creating a standoff with the one-time all-star.

Suck it up Fletcher. McCabe might just be one of your best assets this year. Sure the guy has made some highlight reel goofs but he also eats a lot of minutes and will be a needed veteran on this club. His cap hit goes down after this year so buying him out is just stupid. Let him play and maybe as the season goes on and this team sucks badly (nothing new) he will want out With some of the other guys gone (Sundin,Tucker) maybe Bryan will say "**** this let me outta here".Never know ...if his play improves his contract might seem like a good deal.

Let McBabe play on a terrible leafs team for a few months, then see how receptive he is to waiving his NTC. $4mil is too much dead weight to have sitting on your cap if they buy him out so trade is the only intelligent option...but we are talking MLSE here so really anything goes.

Well said Pete. I am not a huge fan of McCabe but, with all the money they saved by getting rid of some guys, how can they all of a sudden not have anything left?
McCabe ain't great by any stretch but, they need to have someone there to help the young ones for at least a year or so. Don't forget, McCabe is one of the alternate captain's. That shows some kind of leadership qualities.

Leafs hopefully win the draft lottery next year and get Tavares!
Even with Sundin they'll finish last.

WT, That's not Robocop, my friend. That's the Scientologists, the NSL. Bettman and his minions. And if you've gained their attention you can consider yourself doomed. Your height and weight mean nothing to them. They will come for you in the night with their brain ray and soon you will be wondering why you're checking out only T. Cruise and J. Travolta movies from your local Blockbuster.
Don't believe me, ask Santapig, the All Knowing Eye.

I've got something to warn me in case they get inside the perimeter. It's not quite like Michael Jackson's Adult Alarm, but it works even better. It starts with a Brian Burke impersonator taking his pants off to get Bettman's attention, then I unleash the dobermans when Bettman and his posse join in. It's quite entertaining actually.

I've litereally just walked in from spending the evening in a bar ( well it was a retaurantr but I wisely stayed at the bar ) and find this tear inducingly funny. Esprecailly the adult alarm LOL!!!
To paraqphrase Winston Churchill: Yes, Gary, you're a midget and in the morning I'll be sober. I won't even bother to spell check.

The Big Bucks have already been paid to Mccabe the first years were big money and he's only making $4 million and change after this season which is pretty good value for him relative to the league. one more big money year and it's gonna be a good deal for the leafs !

Toronto has to use him properly though, don't have him killing every penalty like they do as it is not his strong suit use him where he excels ( 5 on 5and next to kaberle on the pp )
