Suns explored deal for Childress
The Suns confirmed a report that the Suns did make inquiries about a possible sign-and-trade deal with the Atlanta Hawks for Josh Childress before he decided to leave the NBA and sign a deal in Greece. The Suns did have the $8 million trade exception from the Kurt Thomas trade with Seattle to work with (which expired on July 21), but the deal almost certainly would have included either Leandro Barbosa or Boris Diaw in an attempt to balance the contract and keep the Suns from taking a further luxury tax hit.

What? Trading for a 35+ years old, 300+ lbs, 20+ million dollar, center wasn't enough for Kerr? Then follow that up by running your coach out of town for no compsentation and hiring a guy that didn't do well with another team as head coach (Porter) wasn't enough for Kerr? Kerr will return to TNT in 09, unless the Suns overall agenda is to drop paychecks and get older.

This wasn't as bad as it looks. They picked up Matt Barnes, and Barbosa and Diaw stay put.

Thank goodness that Steve and Rob didn't pull the trigger on this one. Childress is decent, but he's not the answer in PHX.

Childress said that "security" (read money) was the main reason for his decision and he feels that after two years he'll still be young enough and skilled enough to return to the NBA if he wants. He said his teammates supported his decision and they all understand the "business" (read money) of the NBA.
He has a clause in his contract that let's him return to the NBA after each year, if he chooses to do so. Financially, sounds like a smart deal. But he turned down $7 mil and I still don't think he'll get $10 mil per in three years so, unless he's will to take a pay cut next time around, we may have seen the last of him for a while.
