Source: Favre not talking trade

According to a source with knowledge of the trade talks, Brett Favre has refused to speak to any of the teams the Packers have identified as possible trade partners, making it unlikely one of those teams would risk giving away a draft pick or a player for someone who might retire again if he doesn't like the trade. If the Packers can't find a trading partner willing to meet their demands and Favre follows through on his decision to return to the NFL, the future Hall of Fame quarterback could be in a green and gold uniform Friday playing backup to Aaron Rodgers. That's something neither side wants, but it would be the next stage in the game of dare that Favre and the Packers are playing.

Can't blame him. The Jets and Bucs aren't serious Super Bowl contenders. Let the man go...free Brett Favre.

July 30, 2008  06:39 AM ET

Ahh yet another morning with Favre poo poo. What a wonderful start to the day. Apparently he is the only player in the whole NFL worth talking about. Pardon me while I choke on my breakfast........

No way they should just release him. At this point play hardball with him and force Brett's hand. Offer him to a team in a trade for decent value in draft picks. If Brett does not report and retires yet again, the team does not owe the Pack for the picks. If Brett simply refuses to report, he does not get paid, and gets fined as well.

No one forced Brett to sign the previous contract. He can't expect to be simply released now.

July 30, 2008  07:14 AM ET

This isn't very Brett Favre of either side.

July 30, 2008  07:15 AM ET

Yeah - just release him, then deal with your loyal Cheeseheads when he signs with the Bears or Vikes and ends up beating the Pack. Cause that would go over about as well as changing the Pack's colors to Hot Pink and Neon Green.

July 30, 2008  07:15 AM ET

Why should they release Favre? Because he's a nice guy? Cuz he deserves this? This is still a business peeps! If the Packers can get something for him, then get it!

I hate it when people start feeling sorry for stories like this. Oh poor Brett! Boo hoo hoo. Brett's then one who caused all of this. If he didn't want to retire earlier in the year, then he shouldn't have done it. The Packers have a QB ready to go, one that they've been paying good money for and havn't gotten anything out of him yet because they've been waiting for Favre to leave. It's a green issue.

July 30, 2008  07:16 AM ET

The man played hurt and brought that franchise back to being important. The Pack cant have their cake and eat it too. If they dont have plans for him, let him go. If they do have plans, open the QB race and let him compete and win the job.

love the new favre image. you can almost hear him crying.

He shouldn't be able to force his way back after retiring.
How many people can quit a job and just say they want their job back.

July 30, 2008  07:57 AM ET

And how many people can throw a football like him. This isn't an ordinary workplace, let's not pretend this our job.

MixinUpMedicine

it is a job but i am not going to explain myself because you are an idiot

July 30, 2008  08:07 AM ET

Just do what every wide receiver does when they want a new deal. Become a locker room cancer, cause as much team drama as possible until they release you.

July 30, 2008  08:13 AM ET

I'm lovin' this ... go Farve go.... dare them to sit your 3-time MVP, pro-bowl, hall of fame, $12 million butt on the bench... let's see how that goes over with the fans... or the shareholders....

Farve gives the Pack the best chance to win - NOW.... they have no choice but to play him or release him...

Ted Thompson is an idiot... and he knows that he cant go back on his word or his career is over.... he should have never taken such a hard stance in the beginning

July 30, 2008  08:14 AM ET

Why should they release him?

July 30, 2008  08:18 AM ET

hey jgh... thsi isnt like any other job... so to compare... if you ran a company, and your head guy (executive) that was largely responsible for your huge profits and the overall success of your company for 17 years, said he wanted to come back, would you say no so that you can work in a new executive that you THINK MAY be successful??

this is all so stupid because there is no argument here for them to not welcome him back... yeah they are pissed about him changing his mind, but they made their point... now get over it.... and play him as your starter....

if Rodgers doesn't like it, trade him for a 2nd rounder.... you got Brohm now to groom...

July 30, 2008  08:19 AM ET

they shouldn't release him... they should play him... period.
