Is Joe Pa in trouble at Penn State?

Penn State football received the "Outside The Lines" treatment Sunday, and it made the once-admired program looked like a renegade outfit with its revered coach seemingly out of touch with his team and its players. The show found that since 2002, 46 Penn State players have been charged with 163 criminal complaints. Forty-five of those complaints resulted in guilty pleas or convictions. Of the 46 players charged, 27 pleaded guilty or were convicted. More recently, to show the problem is getting worse, 17 players were charged in 2007 with 72 crimes. Nine charges resulted in guilty pleas. The numbers screamed about a lack of control by the coaching staff and a lack of discipline by the players. To those who have followed Joe Paterno closely in recent years, his response was expected. "I think you've done an awful lot of probing which bothers me that you might be on a witch hunt," he said. Asked about the widely held belief that he has given up day-to-day control of the program, Paterno said, "I have the same hands on that I've always had." That's quite a statement coming from a coach who freely admits he often works from home. To prove that he doesn't have control of the program, interviewer Steve Delsohn pointed out to Paterno that in its investigative report of the brawl Judicial Affairs wrote that two players said "all members of the team [were] sent a text message from the head coach threatening to remove them from the team if they came in to Judicial Affairs to speak to its director." Paterno's response to that attempt to circumvent the judicial process was that he doesn't know how to text message and that "I don't even have a computer." Clearly, the message came from someone else in authority using Paterno's name without Paterno's permission. On such an important matter, that is grounds for firing. But as near as can be determined, no punishment was handed out and, for certain, no one in authority was fired. Just another case of a lack of institutional control, which all goes back to Paterno. The most damning part of Paterno's statement was that the man supposedly overseeing a major football program that produces tens of millions of dollars in revenue and is the face of the university for many followers does not know how to operate a computer. The show was a damning indictment that had to leave Penn State officials both furious and embarrassed. It also might be all that was needed to push Paterno into retirement after this season, whether that's what he wants to or not.

Unfortunately, Penn State is not the only program, and is one of many where the kids are acting like complete animals off the field. What I was most apalled about watching that piece on ESPN was Paterno's attitude and the things he actually said on camera to a national audience. PSU officials have a PR nightmare on their hands.

This should get some interesting responses.

Well, it's been fun Joe, but don't let the door hit ya!

July 30, 2008  08:35 AM ET

Is JoePa doing these crimes? Everyone should be accountable for their own actions. These kids are between 18-22, we have kids fighting the war for us in this age group. Don't you think they are accountable? Leave JoePa alone.

How is this shocking? With $10 million of tax free cash on the line in a bowl game the pressure is on the program to produce a team that will get invited to one.(remember, unlike all other divisions,D1 does not settle championships on the field)Penn State has been very average for a long time and the school wants some pay days.Schools that accept actual student athletes can't really compete year after year with the programs that recruit out of the juvie halls and prisons.Ever hear a LSU player talk after a game?Do you relly believe the Vince Youngs or Mike Vicks could get into ANY college based on academics? If you want massive bowl game dough you have to give bags of cash and gold chains to recruits and don't be surprised when they get popped for breaking the law. They have been granted favors and had people look the other way their whole life because they help the team.

Joe get a handle on your program. What's with all of the problems with your players? You're too old. Retire already.

Time for Grandpa Simpson to move on.

Paterno reminds me of the ego-driven athlete who retires and continually comes back (Jordan, lately Favre, etc.). They really can't make the separation and feel the game or organization came survive without them. He has been great for college football but the game has passed him by. These young kids need a different leader.

coswitch, comparing 18-22 year-olds in our military in Iraq to these idiots at Penn State is so off on so many levels. The story here is more about how Paterno has handled this, not so much what these kids are doing. And again, these stupid jocks aren't in the same universe as people being fired at, and bombed in alleyways in Baghdad. I understand what you're trying to say. But you couldn't have chosen a more flawed comparison.

July 30, 2008  08:44 AM ET

They've already tried to force him out. Joe isn't leaving until he says so. He's doing a good job and i'm not envious of the turn over and mega-contracts happening at other programs.

As for the player problems - he can't control 100 college guys 24 hours a day and there's no cure for stupidity.

July 30, 2008  08:46 AM ET

Ha no these kids are between 18-26 more likely

Agreed. There is no comparing kids fighting in a war to college kids playing sports. Totally different.

July 30, 2008  08:48 AM ET

Also - I think Penn State had the 3rd best athlete graduation rate last year which JoePa is partly responsible for. Nobody talks about that.

Yeah there is, it's called a lobotomy.

I would really like to ask JoPa to name his startng QB, starting RB, and at least one D-lineman. Bet he can't. He lost control of this program.

Well maybe he could better serve the program as an academic advisor.

hmmm... You mean teenage boys will get in trouble?!?!??? You think Penn St is the only school putting up numbers like that? And the jab at JoePa not being able to use a computer holds very little water in my boat

July 30, 2008  09:00 AM ET

boston.com has a list in the editorial/opinion section that lists colleges where the graduation rate is below 50% for football players.(Ohio State is the worst with 32%,they might have a good team!)It reads like a tyoical top 25 list.

JoePa needs to get a handle on that. Those are embarassing numbers. I'm appalled by his lack of control. :)
