Gonzalez ponders retirement

Tony Gonzalez said he was 95 percent certain he would play again next year for the Chiefs. The one thing that would probably drive him out after this season? The Chiefs winning the Super Bowl. That indicates Gonzalez believes the Chiefs have a 5 percent chance of winning it this year. That might not sound high, but it's probably higher than most people believe. Gonzalez more likely will be around in 2009. If this season develops as the Chiefs hope, next year will look a lot more promising.

A 5 percent chance? That sounds too high to me. But seriously, if Brodie Croyle was my QB, I would think about retirement alot.

I have been pretty critical of Brodie Croyle....I will take the wait and see approach. This is his 3rd year. You can usually tell what they can do around the middle of the 3rd year.

I still think he is a JP Losman, Harrington, Leftwitch, Simms..............

July 30, 2008  07:23 AM ET

there are several qb options available if croyle fails

Favre needs to land in KC....

Brodie needs to stay away from the hunting DVD's. Tony maybe you can retire and take another shot at the NBA......DL.

July 30, 2008  08:50 AM ET

Don't worry Tony, you'll play next year and the year after. The Chiefs are not going to win the super bowl, they'll be lucky to have a winning record.

July 30, 2008  08:57 AM ET

after that comment he will get a visit from the piss collector. he has to be on something.

July 30, 2008  09:19 AM ET

Tony G. is the definition of a class act. I hope the best for him for whatever decision he decides to make in the future. I appreciate the time he has spent with the Chiefs. It's just unfortunate he doesn't have a Super Bowl ring to go along with all of his other accomplishments.

July 30, 2008  09:25 AM ET

Tony is great player..He is with the wrong team...

Future coach of California Golden Bears.

July 30, 2008  11:16 AM ET

Sounds familiar...didn't Jordan and Favre say crap like this too?

July 30, 2008  11:59 AM ET

Brett favre is going to the Jets....The Chiefs will trade for Chad Pennington

July 30, 2008  01:03 PM ET

The Chiefs will be a contender next year, cuz hopefully Carl Peterson will be gone. Croyle will never be a Super Bowl QB. They need to sign a FA QB next season, spend some money in the off-season and hope all the young players develop nicely this upcoming year. I am a Chiefs fan, but I say we go 4-12.

July 30, 2008  01:38 PM ET

LOL @ jj730 Yeah no kidding.. I'm still a Damon Huard fan and/or if Peterson would do what he did with Joe and go up to Clark Hunt and say... "Brett Favre...?" Clark nods for the o.k. to get it done.. and BOOM YOU HAVE A # 4 BRETT FAVRE in KANSAS CITY... I would faint

July 30, 2008  01:49 PM ET

Oh, no. Not again.

July 30, 2008  04:12 PM ET

NOOOO...Tony can't retire..Who would I have as my fantasy TE... On a more serious note, this guy is how you would like your kids to act if they were pros. Year after year after year he's a top 3 TE and he's never gotten into trouble, never held out for more money and from never has demanded a trade...even though no one would've blamed him if he did..

July 30, 2008  07:40 PM ET

A player who is still loyal to the team that has made him who he is ??? I did not know these guys were still around...

July 30, 2008  10:02 PM ET

I'm a die hard Chiefs fan and I love Tony G. to death. But I really wish Carl Peterson would give this guy a chance at winning the Super Bowl and trade him to a contender. He's waited 11 years and still hasn't won a playoff game. This season I expect us to be about 6-10, but I want the Chiefs to win the big one just because of this guy. He deserves a ring, and I hope we can give him the chance in KC, but otherwise, we need to let him move on.

Conmann33,
very nice sentiment; rarely expressed here on this site. I don't follow the chiefs but am aware of Gonzalaz's skills and after a guy has toiled as long and as hard as he has he does deserve a chance. But who would he fit with? Giants maybe? Boss is still not proven IMHO
