Yankees passing on Washburn?

The Yankees are scouring the market for another starting pitcher after becoming frustrated at the lack of progress in talks for Jarrod Washburn. The Yankees were offering to take the entire $14 million left on Washburn's contract through 2009 and a mid-level prospect or a better prospect if the Mariners would take Kei Igawa. However, Seattle wants the better prospect and no Igawa. So the Yankees are looking around for a different pitcher to provide an upgrade over Darrell Rasner for the rotation.

Good, Jarrod Washburn sucks. The guy is washed up.

Hughes should be back in 3 weeks and Wang should be back Sept 1. Kennedy has been pitching well in AAA ball, which is not saying much. And, Carl... is throwing. Yanks are not going to ship a top prospect to rent a backline starter for a month.

No way. That's just plain stupid.

July 30, 2008  08:56 AM ET

I don't know about Bannister. He's been bad this year. I'd rather have Washburn.

"Wang should be back Sept 1."

I HIGHLY doubt that.

July 30, 2008  09:11 AM ET

Their argument was that Bannister is still young and has potential whereas Washburn had only one good year (02)

If Wang, Hughes were DEFINATLEY not coming back this year-
I'd do it
But we really only need 4-5 starts......
Not sure if it's worth it.

That being said.....
Melky is what he is- a 4th outfielder. good D, a little pop
He has really been exposed though.....
It might be worth it toa take a chance on Bannister- who could be a possible #2 0r #3 starter down the road

with hughes and pavano pitching last night, and wang getting his cast off this week, i think we should try to make due with what we have. maybe try bringing up Kennedy again, and give it another try now that he has pitched in Scranton for a while. he wasn't ready before since he came from either single a or double a ball. he hadn't even seen AAA ball. we don't need another old washed up pitcher

July 30, 2008  09:27 AM ET

I agree, we have 3 guys coming back in the near future its not worth giving up Melky right now. Cause despite his struggles as a hitter, the little things always win baseball games, especially in the playoffs. He can go 0-4 with 3 K's but if he thows out a potential game tying/winning run late in the game, those things help you win championships.

Why is Rasner the one they want to reaplce. I still feel more comfortable with Rasner on the mound than Ponson. Get rid of that bum, without the 8.5 runs he gets behind him, he wouldnt have a damn win. Rasner provides a bit of hope.

July 30, 2008  09:29 AM ET

To win, you need your core players. I know few people see this, but people play better when they are happier. On a team that seems really hard to excite, Cano and Melky are two that really seem to enjoy playing. Lose Melky, and Cano's number will drop. Mark my words.

July 30, 2008  09:44 AM ET

Wang just had his cast removed, he has a boot on and they project 6-7 weeks...
I would like Washburn, he has the potential to be a quality arm, but for Igawa nothing else. If the Yankees are to be the dumping ground for bad contracts so be it, but you don't get a prize with that service.

July 30, 2008  09:48 AM ET

I'm no fan of Washburn but after watching Tasner's and Ponson's last few starts, something has to be done. Someone pointed out yesterday that Washburn has done very well for awhile now. His numbers don't look great but it was due to poor early season performances. Rasner and Ponson are getting shelled out there.

jeter needs to step up, melky is a good kid, but is really a very good 4th outfielder. the yankees need a center fielder who can throw people out and hit 300.

July 30, 2008  10:05 AM ET

BELIEVEINTHEROOKIES: I know it's early but I haven't seen much from Nagy as yet. good arm though. maybe damon in left, nagy in center and abreu in right, with melky as the fourth, bUT nagy ain't hitting yet either. Right now looks more like a 250 hitter than a 325 hitter he was in the NL.

July 30, 2008  10:06 AM ET

Ponson looks like he is teetering on the edge all game, every game. Rasner looks like he is pretty good even when he is getting hit. Rasner is young and gets a little more ratled than a veteran would but he has been doing a good job. If the Yankees had scored a couple of runs earlier for him I think it would have been an entirely different ball game last night.

Good call on those comments, all of them, Tony.
