Tigers, Twins interested in Hawkins

The Tigers are interested in acquiring right-handed reliever LaTroy Hawkins, one industry official said this week. Hawkins is available on the trade market, now that the New York Yankees designated his contract for assignment. He went 1-1 with a 5.71 ERA in New York, leaving some doubt as to how effective he could be in the American League over the remainder of this year. Detroit pursued Hawkins as a free agent during the winter. The American League Central rival Minnesota Twins are also interested in Hawkins, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

He hated being in Minnesota when he was there, why would he come back. Why would the Twins want him back.

Hawkins was the most entertaining Twin I have ever talked to and my favorite to see in the clubhouse. He enjoyed it here. I hope they pick him up again and slide him back to the seventh or eight inning again.

Twins Fan and KCMAC must have been watching different teams...

Hawkins wanted to be the closer, but with Fast Eddie in there there was no way. He was unhappy. I am not saying that he was not a nice guy. And if he enjoyed it so much how come he did not opt to stay?

July 30, 2008  08:31 AM ET

Much agreed biminator... they are both on differnt pages on this guy... And in regards to him coming to Detroit? Well we already have one pitcher that couldn't take it in the AL, are we sure we need two?

July 30, 2008  08:47 AM ET

Aa a Yankee fan all I can say is please take him!!! He is awful in New York.

July 30, 2008  08:51 AM ET

A Fact,

He would be a nice addition to our Lakeland club...

July 30, 2008  08:57 AM ET

He's terrible. Just...really bad.

Enjoy

doesn't make any sense for Minnesota to go after him again when they are the ones that got rid of him the first time. he can't hold a lead he doesn't have the stuff to come in when the game is on the line.. As a Yankee Fan i am glad that they got rid of this guy.. GOOD LUCK to the team that gets him next

The Yanks will take Liriano for him, is he still in the Minors?

July 30, 2008  09:50 AM ET

Another brilliant Cashman signing. Good job Brian!

Dangit AllStarz............you can't have him. He will be up after his next game in the minors or Fridays opener against Cleveland.

July 30, 2008  10:09 AM ET

If I was Cash I would have been calling the Twins just to harrass them, like I leave those Liriano comments here, and then giggle when i got off the phone.
"Hey, i will trade you one of my minor leaguers for one of yours, is Liriano available...heeheehee <click>.

I'm having troubles seeing the benefit for the Tigers. Hawkins ERA 5.71 w/ the Yanks. He is a career a career 4.72 ERA. The Tigers have 4 guys w/ a current ERA under Hawkins career ERA with Dolsi, Seay, Rodney and Zumaya. With Jones being shutdown for a while Rodney and Zumaya are balancing the closing role but are capable of playing MR. With the exception of Fossum, who has a larger ERA, there is not a gain for the Tig's.

The Tigers are in decent shape and this pitcher will bring nothing to the table for them. I do like Leyland's move putting Jones out to pasture and bringing in Rodney to close. I am hoping it works out as Jones is far too erratic. Now, between Rodney and Zumaya, I wonder which one will be the first one "hurt" and unable to pitch . These two have such awesome pitches and potential: potential to be on the DL way too much.

Good call on the first to be hurt. The other night Joel left the game early with stiffness in his arm. He looked decent last night so maybe it was a fluke and goes away never to be seen again. F-Rod has looked good lately. That said we have seen this before with him. Good to bad happens quickly with this guy. For now lets hope we stay as is w/ the injury bug.

did not pitch well, although his velocity was about 92, with some movement, it seemed like everytime he got behind, he could not throw a strike. Unless it was down the middle, and he got creamed. He may be good for another team if he gets his second wind, but he did not do well in NY.

He had games where he looks good, just not enough.
